the twice weekly flights between Kalgoorlie and Adelaide will be axed from July 1 2014.

The airline has cancelled two flights between Adelaide and Kalgoorlie, citing poor tickets sales.

Qantas says customers will have to fly to the east coast, via Perth.

Mayor Ron Yuryevich says he is extremely disappointed that the resource downturn has had a knock-on effect to flights.

He says Kalgoorlie has been fortunate that the airport has had record business.

"We'd all love to see that keep going but reality is there has to be a correction every now and then," he said.

"We've had that last year and this year. There are less flights, there are less people coming through our airport, about 15 per cent less at the last count roughly.

"We did a survey last year or 18 months ago where we surveyed the people coming in on the eastern states flights and the majority by far, 80-odd per cent, were business people and mining-related, so obviously that has to have a knock-on effect."

All direct flights between Karratha and cities on the east coast were also cancelled.

The Shire of Roebourne's Chris Adams says he hopes the decision is temporary.

"I guess we're disappointed that Qantas has axed the eastern states flights from Karratha but it's not the end of the world for the Karratha airport," he said.

"The flights make up less than 2 per cent of the total patronage of the airport, so it's not a major blow in terms of the future of the airport whatsoever."

QANTAS will establish a pilot base in Adelaide to improve scheduling, especially for early morning flights. The 737 pilots will live in Adelaide and become a key element in operating the carrier’s almost 500 flights a week from Adelaide airport.

“Given the significance of Adelaide to our domestic network, and the amount of flights we currently operate in Adelaide, it makes sense to open a pilot base there,” flying operations head Mike Galvin said yesterday. “We already have a cabin crew base in Adelaide, but until now we haven’t had a pilot base. On any given day we have up to a dozen Boeing 737s that spend the night in Adelaide, ready for the first wave of early morning flights.”

The move will reduce costs by not having to accommodate pilots overnight and give SA pilots an opportunity to live at home rather than commuting.

“We already know there is interest from pilots who may have family in Adelaide, want to commute less or want to move there for other reasons,” Captain Galvin said.

Qantas employs more than 600 people in Adelaide, including 200 cabin crew. Until now, 737 pilots have had to base themselves in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth.

Qantas (well, Jetstar) to end its Adelaide-Auckland service. Didn't last very long. And that's the second time now -- first Qantas couldn't make it work, and now Jetstar. And all that time Air New Zealand has somehow been making it work....

THE Qantas Group is cancelling daily services to Auckland from Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide as part of a revised schedule that will see Qantas mainline flying across the Tasman fall 12 per cent during the low season.

Jetstar will axe its three-times-a-week Adelaide-Auckland service from August 24, but add six weekly Auckland-Melbourne services and a weekly Auckland-Sydney flight.

Jetstar Australia and New Zealand spokesman David Hall said the budget carrier had worked hard with tourism organisations and airports to make the Adelaide-Auckland service work, but it had not met expectations.

He said customers would be re-accommodated on services to Auckland via Melbourne and Sydney.

Air NZ is a terrific option when flying from Adelaide to Canada / west coast US / Hawaii.

I was on the way to work this morning and I over heard on the radio that the Adelaide Airport has just released a 2014 Draft Master Plan. The news story once again mentioned a hotel at the airport an expansion of the terminal and more flights in and out of Adelaide! The best I could find is from their website this morning. I haven't had a chance to go through it yet but if anyone wants to and finds something interesting, here it is!

Yep, the Master Plan shows the hotel as a "potential" or "scheduled" development within the next five years, but there's no firm commitment. Other "scheduled activities" for the next five years include:

• demolition of former international terminal building and integration of regional aviation services within Terminal 1
• construction of new northern regional apron
• dedicated taxi drop off point north of plaza
• expansion of emigration and immigration areas (phase 1)
• expansion of international baggage claim (phase 1)
• expansion of international arrivals hall (phase 1)
• expansion of main security check point
• expansion of northern pier and additional apron parking north
• expansion of retail area and development of new airline lounges at an expanded third level.

Adelaide Airport plans $1 billion expansion; 3,500 new jobs mooted as passenger numbers increase

Adelaide Airport wants to invest $1 billion over five years to create 3,500 new jobs and help it cope with increased passenger numbers.

The airport released a new draft master plan today, outlining its objectives for growth, jobs and development over the next 20 years.

The plan has predicted international passenger growth of nearly 6 per cent per annum. Domestic passenger numbers are expected to increase by more than 4 per cent, and regional passenger numbers to grow by more than 3 per cent over the same period.

The preliminary report has also forecast a doubling of the airport's current $2 billion contribution to the South Australian economy.

Airport managing director Mark Young said there were plans to spend $1 billion on building infrastructure.

"We currently have around 17,000 people who are employed either at the airport or with businesses associated with the airport," he said.

"Our predictions are that will double over the 20 years of this master plan and we expect to see investment at the airport of around about $2 billion during that time."

However Mr Young said current flight restrictions would remain.

"We're not advocating anything in the master plan for any change to the existing rules," he said.

"Airlines are required to fly within the existing rules and all the master plan projections ... are on that basis."

The preliminary draft plan will now go on public display until October 24, ahead of a draft master plan being submitted to the Federal Government later this year.

Just heard on Channel 9 news that AAL are courting Delta & United Airlines to provide direct services from ADL to the West Coast of the US. Now that's potentially exciting news!

From notes of mine after flicking through the new Master Plan:
- New taxi set-down area to north of Plaza will at least slightly reduce the current cluster f*ck that is the combined pick-up/set-down area, so welcome from that point of view, but MASSIVELY disappointed no mention of improvements to the current general zone, not even over a 20 year horizon. Their own statistics (Figure 9.7) show more than 65% of all vehicle types which enter the airport are squeezed in to this tiny little area, and I swear most passengers moving regularly through the airport would single that part out as a major issue. Should have added ramps to level 1 of the short-term car-park building for general purpose set-down, keep ground for pick-up, and the new separate taxi zone for both set-down and pick-up.
- New controlled (taxi, bus, official) Access Link from Richmond Rd. They even put a schedule to it of "within 5 years" and is dot point no.1 in the short term (0-5 years) general transport plan. Love the idea, although the cost-saving snake route they're suggesting, rather than a direct ditch, is frustrating. A ditch would also solve the security issues of such an access route and allow it to be general purpose entry/exit route for all vehicle types. Ah well, maybe next time.
- Richmond Rd 'Airport Link' and Morphett Rd 'Southern Collector'. Previously advocated, but seemingly moreso now. Like the idea of this, if only for specialist commercial, public transport, and taxi traffic. Will reduce the heavy and regular airport congestion on SDBD and start to utliize Richmond Rd much better. Hopefully this triggers a major intersection at South Rd and a non-stop upgrade along Greenhil and Glen Osmond Rds to the Freeway.
- Flyover of SDBD for turnright exiting vehicles in medium-term plans. Interesting, but would prefer more capacity investment in the Airport Link (Richmond Rd) route.
- General redevelopment of Terminal 1 initially northeast in to what is now the old Intnl terminal, allowing expansion to all departure and arrival facilities. Increasingly becoming the most pressing issue in the airport now with the increase in numbers.
- Level 3 development in Terminal 1 for lounges, offices, etc.. Imagine the view looking east/southeast towards to hill from up there? Will beat the view from Sydney Qantas First lounge (and come close to my personal favourite, the deck at the soon to be gone Star Alliance lounge in DPS)
- Airport East Precinct, very interesting! Like the proposed new separate freight and logistics terminal development over there, especially with Airport Link and Southern Collector proposals.
- Vickers Vimy relocation to Plaza. About time!

Could not agree with Shuz anymore!

Move it now, while it still can be moved.

Edinburgh would be much more suitable for an airport, while people deep South will complain about travel times; a North-South Freeway in the nearer future would put at ease any of these complains.

Heavy Rail access could be made via Elisabeth on the Gawler line.

It would remove height restrictions on the CBD.

And, the former airport land could be sold for residential development, with the price tag providing a bulk of the finance needed to make such a move possible.

I feel as though we're cramming what we hope to become a massive international airport into a small pocket of land close to the CBD, it's not right.

Whilst the proposals and tragets for this master-plan are seemingly well-thought. Was this not the 2007 rough-proposal of the airport expansion during the same time-span?

Any word on what the plan is for the old departues elevated road?

Isn't Adelaide the only major airport in Australia without a freeway connection? I hope when the North South Motorway gets connected between Torrens and Darlington that somehow there is provision for a freeway link to the airport..

What makes you think it needs one? Perhaps the reason the other Australian airports all have one is that they are in the middle of nowhere?

Any way the north south freeway by any other name will be close by when complete.
