Yeah that is very interesting indeed. There's only 2 shuttle buses anyway - long term parking and Rex.
Maybe the cost of hiring 2 drivers for the year is too much for 'em. Either that or they want to look "green" with the electric buses.
The
electric buses is part of the airport's "green" push. The reason to outsource them would simply be that it is necessary, but not part of the airport's core business. I can't say I've paid attention, but it wouldn't surprise me to find that cleaning and security might be outsourced to experts in those fields too. I don't know why running the car park appears to have remained in-house.
Security and cleaning have been outsourced to third parties for years at all airports.
Perhaps the airport is intending to eventually offer SkyBus transfers to the CBD?..

That does make sense that with Skybus getting the AAL airside/car park shuttle contract, they may start Airport - CBD runs.
With the J1X not proposed to continue with the New AdelaideMetro Network changes, that does provide scope for a new express bus to run to the CBD.

If the J1X does not continue(we will get a better idea some time this month when Adelaide Metro releases info on the proposed changes) it will be interesting to see what happens to the Double Decker JetBus express? Will it join the other one in the Hills?

If it does happen, it won't take long to realise that there is zero viability in charging people $30 return for a bus to and fro the city when for a little bit extra you can catch an Uber or taxi to the front door of your hotel or house.

And it is important that these routes continue to provide a public transport service to the airport.

Really? That bus is often (well not so much lately obviously) quite busy coming from the airport.

The proposed new bus network has route No 1 running to the airport every 15 minutes during the day.
There will also be a western suburbs bus that starts at Port Adelaide and ends at the airport.

Yes, now official with Richard Branson offering his island as collateral. Meanwhile they are still operating based on Govt. instructions and funding to keep at least the Melbourne Sydney route flying.

I did a quick search and his Necker Island [in the Caribbean] is worth approx $60m so the banks may lend $30m against it.... so just a touch short of the
$5 BILLION the airline owes.

Virgin Australia is 90% owned by foreign interests, what proportion of the 5 billion dollar debt is owed to Australian banks I don't know....
The best outcome in the current Virgin administration would be Virgin to survive as a low cost carrier.
Australia (and Adelaide) need more than one airline servicing major Australian cities.
Or country is too big and spread out to go back to a time when people (like me) used to catch buses and trains between cities. I once went to Sydney for a holiday in 1981. I took the daytime Overland train to Melbourne, then immediately connected to the night train to Sydney.......24 hours of slow travel.
I could not even contemplate doing a trip like that ever again......we need affordable plane travel.

I wonder how long it would take to establish inter-city passenger rail (the current services to Adelaide are tourist services, not transport - more like cruise ships). Could it ramp up fast enough to fill a gap before the next airline grows to fill that gap?
Adelaide flights at present are primarily operated by Rex, Alliance and Cobham, all to regional destinations, apart from one Jetstar flight a day to Melbourne and Sydney. I wonder if any of those could pick up some cheap 737s, pilots and landing slots, and build an interstate route network.
Rex is ASX-listed, but major shareholders seem to be based in Singapore. Cobham is owned by a UK parent which in turn is recently owned by US venture capital. Alliance is also ASX-listed, largest shareholder is Qantas (20%).
