There was an article in today's paper stating Singapore Airlines will increase flights to Adelaide to 8 per week starting this summer.

Yeah i saw that singapore airlines said introducing 8 flights a week over summer. I find it interesting that this happens yet qantas says demand is not high enough for more flights. why is adelaide so crap at attracting more airline? is it that we are too close to melbourne or too small market or what?

24 November, although still no date as to when Adelaide will get Tiger flights.

i heard tiger airlines will fly to adelaide sometime early next year, definatly not this year, but yes they begin flying towards the end of november to melbourne, perth, darwin, sunshine coast, canberra, (brisbane?) and a couple more airports in queensland

The growth in the number of international passengers passing through Tullamarine has actually been declining for the past year or two, although still growing. Some international airlines have been pulling out of Melbourne in recent years.

RECORD PASSENGER FIGURES FOR ADELAIDE AIRPORT

A record number of passengers have travelled through Adelaide Airport in 2006/07, surpassing the 6 million mark for the first time according to figures released today.

Adelaide Airport Limited’s Annual Report shows that close to 6.3 million passengers flew in and out of Adelaide Airport in 2006/07, an increase of about 470,000 passengers, or 8.1 per cent, on the previous year.

AAL has reported a net profit before tax of $4.8 million for 2006/07 on the back of $126.3 million in revenue.

Managing Director Phil Baker said the airport recorded significant traffic growth across all segments of the passenger market, with international arrivals and departures recording the biggest increase.

“Our international services have led the way with a 26.5 per cent increase to 453,000 passengers, domestic services increased 6.3 per cent to 5.3 million, and regional services increased 14.7 per cent to 473,000,” Mr Baker said.

“Over the past year we have attracted more domestic and international flights to Adelaide. From an international perspective, Cathay Pacific services to Hong Kong are now operating daily, following the example set by Singapore Airlines’ with its daily flights to Singapore.

“Similarly Air New Zealand has added flights to Auckland and will fly daily from February 2008, while Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines will operate extra flights over the summer peak season.

“Domestic patronage continues to grow, and we have seen a rapid expansion of services operated by Regional Express, in particular to Port Lincoln. We’ve also welcomed Alliance Airlines which now operates services to Olympic Dam, and Air South is flying four times a day to Kangaroo Island.

“We anticipate passenger numbers will continue to increase as a result of South Australia’s burgeoning defence and mining industries, and as we undertake considerable activity to attract new entrants including in the low cost carrier market.”

Mr Baker said the record passenger growth was further good news after the airport was named the world’s second best airport in the 5-15 million passengers category at the Airports Council International awards for service quality, and was voted Australia’s best capital city airport by the Australian Airports Association.

AAL recently announced plans to expand its T1 facilities by demolishing the old international terminal and adding aerobridges and more regional aircraft parking. There are also plans to reopen the old domestic terminal building to cater for anticipated demand from mining charters and low cost carriers, while other future plans include more aircraft hangars, freight facilities, offices, car parks and an airport hotel.

ADELAIDE Airport smashed through the 6 million passenger mark for the first time in 2005-06 as it posted a $4.8million profit.

It expects the trend to continue as the South Australian capital benefits from the mining boom and moves to attract low-cost carriers.

Adelaide Airport Ltd's annual report shows passenger numbers rose 8.1 per on the previous year to nudge 6.3 million passengers in what managing director Phil Baker describes as significant growth in all market segments.

International passenger numbers rose 26.5 per cent to 453,000 while domestic services increased 6.3 per cent to 5.3million.

Regional passenger numbers also rose, increasing 14.7 per cent to 473,000, while international freight exports rose 19.9 per cent to 9379 tonnes.

International airlines adding flights to the South Australian capital last year included Cathay Pacific and Air New Zealand, both of which are aiming to ultimately introduce daily flights.

Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines are also planning to boost services during the summer peak.

Mr Baker said the additional flights more than balanced the decision by Qantas to cease its Adelaide-Auckland services, and the withdrawal of Garuda Indonesia.

"Domestic patronage continues to grow and we have seen a rapid expansion of services operated by Regional Express, in particular to Port Lincoln," Mr Baker said.

"We've also welcomed Alliance Airlines, which now operates services to Olympic Dam, and Air South is flying four times a day to Kangaroo Island.

Despite the record passenger numbers, Mr Baker noted that aircraft movements were only now reaching the levels experienced before the collapse of Ansett and the September 11 attacks in 2001.

"This is largely due to airlines flying larger aircraft and achieving larger passenger loadings per aircraft," he said.

The airport opened its $260million multi-user integrated terminal in 2005 and has since announced plans to expand the facility by demolishing the old international terminal.

It also has plans to reopen the old domestic terminal to cater for mining charters and low-cost carriers.

"There are also plans for more aircraft hangars, freight facilities, offices, car parks and even a hotel," Mr Baker said.

Solar airport plan 'a secret'

THE State Government has chosen a new plan for the troubled Adelaide Airport Solar Project.

Details, however, are being kept secret until Premier Mike Rann has an opportunity to make a public announcement.

As revealed by The Advertiser on September 17, the original concept for the $1 million project was axed two years after Mr Rann announced the airport would be the first in Australia, and possibly the world, to be solar-powered.

The project was taken up as an Advertiser Watch issue on October 6 to try to help get it moving.

The Advertiser in September reported an Adelaide Airport Ltd and State Government working group had decided to "go for a completely new concept".

Office of Major Projects and Infrastructure executive director Rod Hook said one of two options put forward by AAL had been selected by the Premier.

"They (AAL) will now design that with a detailed design and proceed to call tenders, with a view to installation early next year," Mr Hook said.

"When they've done some further designs and have something that is visually good, there will be a public release of exactly what it is."

AAL has favoured a concept it says is "currently operating in the city of Adelaide" very successfully and that could be delivered within budget.

The Premier, however, wants to ensure any project has a "visual" component to try to highlight the Government's green credentials.

Mr Hook said he had to wait for the Premier to "release the information about the new project when it's properly drawn up".

"I will not pre-empt any future announcements," he said.

Mr Hook said the tender process would begin before Christmas. It was expected to cost $1 million.

AAL spokesman John McArdle said while the airport's preferred concept had not been selected, the new option was "a more efficient and effective scheme".

"It gives you more power for the capital expenditure. We're proud to be working with the state on this sustainable project," he said.

AirAsia X eyes second Australian destination

Malaysia's long-haul budget carrier AirAsia X is planning to expand its Australian operations with a second destination after launching its maiden flight to the Gold Coast, according to news reports.

Chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani told the New Straits Times that the carrier had begun negotiations with several cities, including Newcastle in New South Wales and Avalon in Victoria.

"We are keen on Avalon as it is an open airport without any congestion. It will also be cheaper for us to land there," he said.

Azran said the second Australian destination would be added after AirAsia X - currently operating with a leased Airbus A330 - takes delivery of a fleet of 15 aircraft next September.
No thought for Adelaide?
