Port River Expressway Stage One open to traffic

Stage One of the Port River Expressway is open to traffic.

Stretching 5.5 kilometres between Salisbury Highway, Wingfield and Francis Street at Port Adelaide, motorists can drive straight onto the Port River Expressway from Salisbury Highway if heading in a westerly direction towards Port Adelaide.

Work on Stages 2 and 3, which include the building of the road and rail bridges over the Port River, will begin in October this year.

Amazing stuff... !! Thanks AG.

I'm still not fond of opening bridges, but I do hope the residents around the marina are satisfied now and that everything should be 'smooth sailing' now. *couldn't help the pun sorry*

Nice pics RB. I've been on that dolphin cruise and on a nice sunny day, it's awesome even if you don't see any dolphins.

Does anyone know what's happening with the deepening of the port river? Last I heard the SA Gov wanted to make it a priority so that the supertankers can still dock instead of bypassing Adelaide and docking only at Melbourne.

The dredging is at Outer Harbor where the freight ships dock. Inner Harbor and Port Adelaide have not been in use as a port since containerisation began in the 1950s. Inner Harbor isn't going to be dredged.

Thank for the images RB!

Just for the sake of it I drove on the new expressway last weekend, and whilst I really liked the look and feel of the road, specially the entrance to Port Adelaide, I cannot understand why the speed limit is 80. This defies logic as the South Road connector has a speed limit of 100? The new espressway should have a speed limit of 100, as it can handle the speed.

I'm hoping they'll up the speed limit once the construction at the end is finished, but it still makes no sense.

The Salisbury Highway Connector is now just "Salisbury Highway."

Having travelled on the expressway, my gut feeling is the speed limit is reduced to ease bottlenecking in Port Adelaide.

Yes, it does seem a bit silly to have a large high speed capacity road suddenly end in some small crappy road near Port Adelaide.

Hmmm, if Port River Expressay is always abbreviated to PRExy, then what was the Southern Expressway abbreviated to?

Looks like a lot of progress has been made already without much notice. The piling work looks just about done.
