There's been a direction sign to Melbourne for the past 20+ years at that particular intersection. There is direction signs to the word ADELAIDE in Melbourne.

i know it's been there for over 20 years, i was merely bringing up the fact that it is there.

What's wrong with that? It's the way to Melbourne.

i completely understand that, but i've always thought it was a bit unusual having a sign directing to melbourne in that particular location.

I think it's because South Rd -> Greenhill Road -> Glen Osmond Rd is one of the alternative routes from Port Adelaide to the freeway.

has anyone else seen the sign on greenhill road at the glen osmond road intersection which has a big arrow next to the word MELBOURNE. i always found this quite bizarre.

Before the Glen Osmond Road / South Terrace intersection was re-aligned, there used to be a fingerboard pointing down Glen Osmond Road, and the bottom finger said Melbourne. It may even have said Melbourne 462. That was miles, of course.

On the other side of Tailem Bend, where the Mallee Highway takes off, there's a big green highway sign saying "<- Sydney".

Essentially being an extension of the Sturt Highway, it would make logical sence to name it the Sturt Expressway (or Freeway) and then continue the Sturt name along the entire future corridor as it is built, perhaps all the way to Sturt, and beyond.

Great idea, we need more roads in Adelaide named after people. Generic names like Northern Expressway, Southern Expressway and even The South Road Super way just seems so bland.

Sturt Connector.
Sturt Superway.
Sturt (whatever is done from the southern end of the Superway to the Anzac Highway underpass).
Sturt Underpass.
Sturt southern bit from the Anzac Highway underpass to Sturt Road (I know nothing of major free-flowing substance will be done on this bit in my lifetime, but it's nice to dream).
Sturt Darlington connector (possibly also questionable in my liftime).
Sturt Southern Expressway.

Or the whole lot could be simply called the Sturt Expressway. That might inspire the Double Blues to win another SANFL premiership. Again, perhaps not in my lifetime.

One deviation though. The proposed interchange on the Northern Connector adjacent to the Bolivar sewage treatment plant should be named the Stinkworks Interchange in honour of the aformentioned sewage treatment plant itself.

I believe if you're going to change the name, why not commercialise it and sell the naming rights to a large South Australian Company as they do with Football Stadiums. Might as well make some money from it.

I agree wholeheartedly, but how much could the Double Blues afford for the naming rights ?

This would acknowledge the fact that the northern part has always been the Sturt Highway, and hopefully would extend further than Regency Park, through the City of Charles Sturt at Hindmarsh as the roadway is improved.
