Would love to see inside it, wonder if there are any old photos. Idea of boutique retail and restaurants at the bottom is very promising

it's not that great

worked their up until the day Westpac moved out.

The views are Ok without being outstanding, the toilets are 1930's (i believe they are heritage listed) it is so old that the Womens toilets are outside the office space....next to the entrace desk to each floor  . The worst part being when the Adelaide Club had lunch, our toilets smelt like whatever they were cooking as the exhaust fans were right next to the toilet windows (on some levels) - and no the smell is not nice, especially mixed with other smells.

Level 10 is a great function centre but it's views are really impeded by all of the taller buildings and the fact that the best views are basically roads...Down North Terrace and Down King William road.

The old Bank branch is however fascinating, to get an idea go across to Saldechin and try and find the toilets !

Go up high enough and there'd be views into the grounds of Government House. Not something many get to see...
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

yes, level 10 can get you that (the windows weren't cleaned very often so it was hard to make out some times  )

if they could add another few levels it would be better

However given Westpac couldn't make it viable to do that, I'm not sure how anyone else will.

Although it is unlikely that it would happen, there are ways to add on additional floors to a heritage listed building. Just look at Gawler Chambers down the road as an example.

I don't believe the external heritage listing was an issue in the redevelopment.

from memory, the lack of space + the then council restrictions was the biggest impediment followed by internal heritage listing.

Not sure what is going on here, but 'McMahon Services' now has signage attached to the ground floor window.

Would be great to see this join the old CM building in getting brought back to life.

I've seen plenty of activity in the building over the last couple of days.

I passed by (tried to listen) as a few people walked out of the entrance and met with some people waiting out front (I heard Counciller but I have not idea what the context)

today I also heard a fair bit of noise coming from the ground and 1st floors, so something is happening.

Mc Mahon Services are often used in demolition of hazrdous sites ie, when asbestos is present. It is possible that there is some kind of asbestos removal going on inside the building ie old switch boards/plant rooms etc, but do hope it is in prep for more as this is a prime location and a waste at present.

The view from the rooftop would be stunning, so I hope this bar will be public access. I wouldn't mind savouring a few drinks up there...
I think, therefore I tram

This would have been a much much better location for the supposed Apple store than Rundle Place. Something more in line of their other heritage building stores, rather than the mall style setup. Oh well.

Glad to see things happening with this building though, as it's crazy to have been empty for so long.

adelaidenow wrote:A ROOFTOP bar would crown a proposed $10.5 million refurbishment of the former Westpac building on the corner of North Tce and King William St.

The Duxton Group wants to convert the ground floor and mezzanine of the vacant, state heritage-listed building for retail while retaining levels one to seven for offices.

The City Council's development assessment panel (DAP) will consider the plans tonight (Tuesday, December 18).

The previous owners of the building, on the corner of North Tce and King William St, had proposed turning it into a hotel.

The DAP will also consider plans from Tangcheng Developments for a $45 million mixed used development at 231-245 Waymouth St, west of Light Square.

The proposal includes a three-level "podium" with two towers rising above it.

The ground floor of the podium would house a hotel lobby, lounge and bar, and seven retail outlets, below two floors of offices.

Above the podium would be a 15-storey residential building with 106 apartments and a seven-storey hotel with 74 rooms.

The DAP can make recommendations but planning approval for both the North Tce and Waymouth St developments would ultimately need to come from the Development Assessment Commission, as they are valued at more than $10 million.
