by removing things that make us unique, such as gum trees we are removing the "australianism" that is attached to Australia.

really, look at Melbourne and Sydney (and Brisbane) they all could be picked up and transferred anywhere in the world

Perth, couldn't - it is uniquely Australian which SA is as well - until we let people start ripping up gum trees because they are too big and make our skyline look small

"Australianism"? Spare me. Gums are ugly trees, and in the context of a developed Riverbank area, are unneeded to make it ozzie mate. However, by all means let them flourish along the more "native bushland" of other stretches of the Torrens.

I don't think gum trees are ugly, coming from overseas I think they are unique and very Australian.

you see them as ugly because you desire a European style gardens (unsustainable in Adelaide), heaps of people are like that because we have been brought up to envy Europe. (i.e what the "ideal" looks like)

it's cultural cringe at it's worst.

seriously, it is ok that Australia has floura and fauna that is different than the rest of the world and its also ok to present that flora to the world rather than just coping somewhere else.

Whilst I do like European style gardens (although, I prefer Japanese gardens), it's not a cultural cringe. I just genuinely find gums to be ugly trees - from their gangly trunks, to the brown-green leaves, to their tendency to drop everything from gum nuts over my balcony to large branches on people's property. I do like other Australian flora, like wattles and jacarandas. Halifax St looks particularly impressive when in a full bloom of purple.

Well whatever the tree types, something needs to be done.
Some order needs to be created along the river bank.
It looks like there's a bunch of different trees all over the place. As if everything was built around the trees.
Some proper landscaping, with a common tree type is needed to improve the general look of the area.

Right now it looks a mess.

All I want is a couple of trees partly blocking the Festival Centre removed. Not replacing all the gum trees in the parklands. Geez

I agree with Crawf here. I just wish that they would remove the gum trees that currently block the view of the Festival Theatre from the river view. They just don't compliment the Festival Theatre's surroundings very well.

Having said that, I quite rather like the natural/bush look that has been quite well preserved on the northern bank of the Torrens.

(another one off topic)

What's so great about having natural bush in the city? Most people don't live/go there to look at the bush. And by the way; the real cultural cringe is to have to show who you are at every turn. Should they plant cactuses in the central square of Marrakesh to feel more Morroccan?

Other than the fact that the native trees of Adelaide are ideally designed to grow in Adelaide conditions?

no one is talking about at every turn, no need to go to the extremes because it really doesn't help you case.
