There was scaffolding out the front of Ted's Camera Store on Rundle St this morning. Anyone know what they're doing? If ever there was a shop front that needed some major work, it's that one.

What canopy?
I'm assuming they mean the verandah around the building.

Meanwhile, this pic highlights the well what they intend on changing - everything from the dark green windows down.

Unfortunately all they've done is paint the place... light yellow. Pretty close in shade to a banana paddle pop. Not an improvement in the slightest.

Forever New are moving into that refurbished store where Book Boys were leasing that looks like a knock off of Apple. Much better store than their current location down near Pulteney.

Also a 2nd Collette store has opened at the other end of the mall and they are both staying.... not sure why.

Apparently they are planning a $20million "make over" of the Rundle Mall store..

I peeped a look in there at lunchtime, there's already stock on the floor and there is a big KMart sign on the ground ready to be attached over the entrance.

Adelaide's Rundle Mall to welcome new shops, refurbished retail outlets

by:
Tim Williams

From:
City Messenger November 07, 2012

RUNDLE Mall Management Authority is flagging a series of openings and refurbishments after a report painted the strip's vacancies in a negative light.

Its plans include a "flagship" two-storey Cotton On with a cafe in the former Borders site and a dual level revamp of the former Book Boys shop by women's fashion shop Forever New.
A report by property consultants Savills listed 15 empty shops in the mall at the end of the September quarter, as the vacancy rate leapt from from 7 per cent to more than 10 per cent.
However, the report considers any shop not trading as a vacancy, though it does acknowledge a number of makeovers are underway.

Rundle Mall Management Authority general manager Martin Haese said the vacancy rate was in reality "very low''.

He said the only two "genuine vacancies'' were the shops formerly occupied by Darryl Lea and Innocenti, which had moved into Gay's Arcade.

"Every other site has got hoarding around it,'' he said. "Stores with hoarding are being refitted, which means they have tenants. Kmart (formerly Toys 'R' Us) yes it's a vacancy, but there's a multi-million dollar refurbishment going on there.

"We view store refurbishments as entirely positive outcomes for the precinct.''

In the past month 4U Jewellery had opened at the bottom of the Renaissance Tower and Colette by Colette Hayman women's accessories shop was now in the former OPSM site at the James Place corner, Mr Haese said.

Construction was expected to start early next year on a new two-storey building on the former Foods For Life and Ice site, though Mr Haese did not know what tenants were slated for it.

A $30 million upgrade of Rundle Mall, including repaving, will start in February. Mr Haese said businesses had been assured they would not lose a single day's trade as a result of the redevelopment.

In another boost for the mall, the Sunday Mail revealed developer Ginos Group intended to reopen the Regent Arcade cinemas, turning the two existing theatres into four "gold class'' ones.

Savills research analyst Hamish Johnstone said counting shops not trading as a vacancy was "a statistical measure''.

"We're not trying to speculate on the retail market,'' he said.

The report said Rundle St had three vacancies of 104 shops.

British retailers invited to take advantage of strong Australian retail sector

Released: 14/11/2012

British retailers are being offered a unique opportunity to escape the downturn on the UK high street and set up shop Down Under, thanks to an initiative from Adelaide City Council, the Rundle Mall Management Authority and the State Government of South Australia.

The Agent-General of South Australia in London is actively looking for retailers from the UK and across Europe to join South Australia’s premier shopping precinct, Rundle Mall, as part of an initiative to boost Adelaide’s profile and expand its retail offering.

Council and Rundle Mall Management Authority have provided dedicated resources to manage the process, ensuring target retailers have all the information and support required to make the right decision about Mall as an investment opportunity.

“Adelaide City Council has committed in excess of $30 million to the upgrade of Rundle Mall, with works set to commence in February 2013,” said Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood.

“The redevelopment will physically transform the precinct and it is also important that we ensure the retail mix is in line with any world class shopping destination”.

“The campaign is also designed to capitalise on the tens of billions of dollars of capital investment already under way throughout the City and the State.”

Whilst one in seven shops on the British high street are now empty, the Australian retail sector has continued to expand, with turnover growing by up to 4 per cent in the year to July 2012. With plans for four new flights a week between Dubai and Adelaide estimated to inject $200 million into the state economy, there has never been a better time for foreign retailers to make their mark on the state.

As well as fast-fashion favourites Reiss, Topshop and Marks & Spencer, luxury British brands such as Stella McCartney and Burberry also feature on the State’s wish list in a bid to transform Rundle Mall into a luxury shopping destination.

In addition to the UK, retail groups across Europe are also being targeted, including brands such as LVMH and Zilli, Longchamp (France), Salvatore Ferragamo and Prada (Italy), H&M and J Lindeberg (Sweden), Leineweber and Laurel (Germany) as well as Isdia and Alfredo Dominguez (Spain). All have either opened branches in Australia already, but not in South Australia, have indicated an intention to open in Australia or are actively opening branches in Hong Kong, Singapore and China so are internationally active in the region.

“With new travel routes being created into South Australia, the state is fast becoming an attractive destination for foreign business,” said Matt Johnson, Deputy Agent-General to the Government of South Australia.

“South Australia’s relative economic stability makes it a wise choice for businesses looking to escape the gloom of the British retail sector and take advantage of a booming Asian market that will be brought right to their doorstep.

“We hope that by getting unique foreign retailers on board, Rundle Mall and the City of Adelaide will truly be put on the map as a shopping destination of choice for both tourists and locals.”

Theo Maras, Chairman of the Rundle Mall Management Authority added: “Rundle Mall is already South Australia’s premier shopping precinct but the addition of British retailers will really give the city a unique edge and will make the Mall stand out from the crowd.”

“South Australia is a great place for retailers to invest and we hope that British and European retailers will seize this opportunity with both hands,” Theo said.
