News & Discussion: Laneway & Streetscape Projects
Re: News & Discussion: Laneway Revitalisation Projects
Leigh St had a street market today with a band playing also. The most perfect spot for a market. Was buzzing and oozing with atmosphere. This is where they should have an outdoor market every Sunday because the street is already closed off to traffic

Not sure if this belongs here but a 2nd Anytime Fitness is opening in the CBD in next couple of months down James Place. This will be great to further enliven this laneway.

Re: News & Discussion: Laneway Revitalisation Projects
oh my, just rode into town and noticed the scaffolding was gone from Peel Chambers on Peel Street. What an absolutely stunning old building has been uncovered. The yucky greenish paint is gone and the most beautiful old brickwork has been exposed. Now one of the most elegant, old, important buildings in the city

Yeah, it's a massive improvement. These guys are behind it: http://www.urbanedge.com.au/current-project.htmljk1237 wrote:oh my, just rode into town and noticed the scaffolding was gone from Peel Chambers on Peel Street. Lots of work happening right now at both ends. Will look great and more appealing once completed.Ben wrote:Bank Street Upgrade about to start

Also some type of footpath upgrade is underway next to the bus stop on the corner of Bank Street and North Terrace.
Re: News & Discussion: Laneway Revitalisation Projects
Bank Street upgrade is expected to be finished by 27 February 2013. Very speedy construction work if that's the case! Looking forward to the end result also. I will try and take a photo or two of the works once complete.

Meanwhile in Peel Street, large windows have been installed on the eastern side of the former Fletcher Jones heritage building for new shopfronts. A vast improvement on what was there before. Peel Street holds a lot of potential to be more of an intimate laneway much like James Place is.
Is it just me or do our laneways here in Adelaide seem quite wide compared to laneways elsewhere? When I think of laneways in European cities, Melbourne and Sydney, their laneways are often literally no wider than 2 people abreast + a small table & 2 chairs.

Chesser Street is having it's Summer/Autumn makeover. Looking good, I wish they'd leave it for the full year.
cheers,

It's not just you.[Shuz] wrote:Is it just me or do our laneways here in Adelaide seem quite wide compared to laneways elsewhere? When I think of laneways in European cities, Melbourne and Sydney, their laneways are often literally no wider than 2 people abreast + a small table & 2 chairs.
A lot of our original tiny laneways have been removed and most of what is left is proper commercial access lanes. There's still a few of the tiny "nightcart"* lanes left in the older residential areas.
(*google it if you don't know what they were lol)
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

Love the parklet. Most likely not my influence but I formally suggested similar to the ACC a couple of years back. You see them everywhere in Italy & France. Difference being the European ones are for cafe patrons, while the bank st parklet appears to be 'public seating'.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
Re: News & Discussion: Laneway Revitalisation Projects
looks great, hopefully a real winner for the ACC.
Re: News & Discussion: Laneway Revitalisation Projects
The parklets look good, but I'm in two minds about the blue painted section. All up it's an improvement, but it will be good once the rest of the upgrade is completed later this year.
Anyone else been to Bank Street today?, thoughts?. P.S John Rau was speaking whilst I there and he mentioned about some exciting news that will be announced soon... straight after he was told to hush hush from one of his advisers.
Possibly Topham St Mall?
