bands who play early at soundwave fly on to the next state as a rule (usually perth). there were no problems with accommodation for soundwave this year (from someone involved.)
but we still need more, quality hotel rooms - a number of big bands stay here (outside of hilton, intercontinental etc) at some pretty crummy places.

The problem is everything is crammed into a short amount of time. For example, I'm sure there is quite a few shows in the Fringe and Adelaide Festival that aren't getting many audience members due to the fact that there is just too much things happening in Adelaide right now. And these events are massive.. 40,000 at Soundwave, 90,000 at Clipsal, thousands at the Fringe and Festival etc
In all, the Mad March concept needs to be reviewed. The Clipsal 500 and Adelaide Festival could be moved to later in the year to allow them to expand into much larger events and break that reputation that Adelaide is only alive for a month. Plus, it's getting hard for people to see all the great things that are current on offer due to time management and money.
To break it down
Weekend just gone
- Adelaide Festival Opening Night
- Adelaide Fringe
- Clipsal 500
- Soundwave
This weekend
- Adelaide Festival
- Adelaide Fringe
- WOMADelaide
- Adelaide Cup Day
- Future Music Festival
Next weekend
- Adelaide Festival
- Adelaide Fringe
- OZ Comic Con
Weekend after
..
I feel exhausted thinking about it. :/

On topic, looks like the piling rig has arrived on site this morning.

Yet, there were record crowds out this weekend.....crawf wrote:The problem is everything is crammed into a short amount of time. Last couple years they've been complaining everything clashed, this year the tune is the opposite.
Off topic I know, but rather then space things out, why not have even MORE on throughout the year..
Obligatory on topic, ugly hotel.

I think we need to be very careful here. It's better to have Soundwave on the same weekend as the Clipsal 500
then to not have it at all.
Honestly Soundwave was big this year (40,000 people) and would have drawn a couple of thousand spectators from interstate
I am sure. It's a national festival and if there are too many problems in Adelaide and a lot of complaints
then the promoters could quite easily say we're not coming to Adelaide anymore.
Also it's not that easy for the organisers to move Soundwave to another date. It's a national festival they can't just
have the Adelaide event 2 weeks after all the other events. The bands would not be interested in flying back and forth
all over the country as well.
Furthermore the Metallica fans who also like car racing - they could have gone to Soundwave saturday
and then the clipsal on sunday.
then to not have it at all.

Well, Soundwave was sold out, so it's not like they missed out on any potential audience.

I work in this industry, whilst a lot of your points are well said. Adelaide won't get chopped off this tour circuit, there was question when the council tried to introduce some crappy regulations a couple of years ago but other than that it wouldn't leave SA, too much money they'd be missing out on.ghs wrote:I think we need to be very careful here. The blame goes to the organisers of the Clipsal, they changed from their usual weekend to avoid Future Music Festival and WOMAD. Which was stupid. Why?
WOMAD usually has a completely differing demographic to the Clipsal 500, as does Future Music Festival. On-top of that, both WOMAD and Future Music don't usually have Adelaide artist side-shows for their event.
Soundwave however does. They usually have side-shows for a lot of the smaller bands on the line-up, which for our local live music venues is $$$. This year due to the Clipsal and their better than usually line-up of music acts for their side-tracked shows meant that organising side-shows on that weekend, as well as finding quality accommodation for these act was near impossible.. Therefore seeing a heap of side-shows not taking place in Adelaide.
Whilst its all well and dandy for the Clipsal to have its dates on that weekend it's ruining a whole other aspect for our live music scene.
Hell! The fact that the bands, roadies and such couldn't even spend a night in Adelaide is a big loss to our reputation. This years line-up of bands were a quality bunch, partying in all the capital cities they visited, and the roadies; there were hundreds... Which is small sum of money lost to our state economy... Whilst only a small amount, it's still a loss...

Err, because WOMAD is only a couple of hundred metres away, and smooth urban sounds clash with roaring engines, low flying jets, and post race concerts.Patrick_27 wrote:The blame goes to the organisers of the Clipsal, they changed from their usual weekend to avoid Future Music Festival and WOMAD. Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Plenty of other festivals bypass Adelaide - Supafest for example. I am sure there are others as wellPatrick_27 wrote:I work in this industry, whilst a lot of your points are well said. Soundwave had a good line up this year so it was worth coming to Adelaide.
Next year if the line up is not so good then there's no doubt in my mind that Adelaide could get chopped.

That is rubbish, there is no consideration being made for Adelaide losing it's leg of the tour. If this was even being considered it'd have happened much earlier in the mix of the festivals existence, if anything Soundwave Touring wants to further expand on our states live music market with their Harvest Festival (yes, it's in September/October, but still applicable to this point). Perth is the founding city of Soundwave and with all the trouble currently happening between organisers, the local and state government and surrounding residents of the festival site, you'd think they'd just chop Perth; but they're better than that. The promoter would rather die that lose to opposition/competition. Apologies if I sound abrupt.ghs wrote:Plenty of other festivals bypass Adelaide - Supafest for example. WOMAD could easily swap its dates with Clipsal so it clashes with Soundwave (differing target audience to Soundwave so there shouldn't be too many dramas) and Future Music could clash with the 'new' Clipsal weekend seeing as the Future Music is now held on the Western Park-lands.Wayno wrote:Err, because WOMAD is only a couple of hundred metres away, and smooth urban sounds clash with roaring engines, low flying jets, and post race concerts.Patrick_27 wrote:The blame goes to the organisers of the Clipsal, they changed from their usual weekend to avoid Future Music Festival and WOMAD.
