I guess the positive in that is that it fits in with practically everything else on that side of the bridge in looking dated and ugly.

You'd think for $350m we'd have gotten something that looks a bit better than what we got.

I wish we had got this.

On the left , Simple Stylish Elegant on the right Awkward Angular Awful. I have tried to like the new western extension but it just doesn't add up . It is just a collection of Glass and Alucobond panels.

If those hideous rowing sheds weren't there, I feel like most people's opinion of this building would be different.

I tend to agree, the schools should at least make the sheds more attractive, particularly, the brown brick uglyness. A bit of paint and landscaping would do wonders! Being private schools, I am sure they are not lacking in funds.

Tax payers would end up paying for any changes anyway.

It really needs an extension on the east end it looks odd at the moment. An east and west wings added would look okay, atm the west extension looks heavy two similar extensions as per the render above a bit it would look much better and even. I guess this will all even out when stage 2 is completed.

Shame the rowing shed were not replaced with some space in the basement of the new convention centre with some shared bar facilities.

Gearing up for stage 2/east end already. Demo underway

Let's not spin that record around again. Some people loathe the boat sheds, others find them a source of charm. Either way, it's likely they'll remain untouched for a while to come.

But back to the building:
Image

I must admit, in this photo, it looks remarkably better integrated with the older part than I had expected. Which is to say, it's not great, but there's a whisper of coherence (with less brown and more silver, it might even be saved). But my fear is that the second stage will not improve matters but rather add to the sense of dog's breakfast. You'd wanna hope these buildings are functionally brilliant so that their aesthetic failings don't compromise the riverbank revival.

I am sure there will be a lot more debate about this building still to come. On the western side disorder again reigns supreme. The Western entrance in the swooping arch may prove of interest but I will wait until the temporary fencing is removed. The maintenance ladder to the roof was obviously an after thought.(This is permanent).

It's already a dog's breakfast. The second stage will be the icing on that breakfast. I've said it before early in this thread, the design lacks consistency. They could have done a better job style-wise if they kept the lines more curvy and added more glass. Another great opportunity gone missing for a world-class building because we like to add bits over time and do it badly. My :2cents: worth.

Cheers

That Western side looks pretty boring and like something from the 80's not 2014 and not very modern/striking like its neighbour
