Figured this needed its own thread. Track has apparently already been fully graded.

BULLDOZERS have begun work on South Australia’s second V8 Supercars track at Tailem Bend, developer Sam Shahin has revealed.

And leading figures in the nation’s motorsport industry have thrown their weight behind the $80m project.

The 7.2km circuit, located 93km from Adelaide near Tailem Bend, has been fully graded ahead of Development Assessment Commission approval expected in mid April.

Revealing artist’s impressions of the multi-motorsport facility for the first time, Mr Shahin told The Advertiser $80m funding for the project had been secured and with approval full construction would begin in July.

“We have not set out to make a good track, we want to make a great track,’’ Mr Shahin said.

“We (the Shahin family, originally from Palestine) came to Australia 30 years ago as refugees and we are very proud, very parochial South Australians,’’ he said.

“South Australia has given us every opportunity and to be able to give something back to South Australia in the form of this motorsport complex is a terrific opportunity to repay some of the great things this state has offered us for 30 years.’’

Mr Shahin said $20m would need to be spent upgrading water, electricity, sewerage and road access to the site when construction began.

Eighty per cent of the project would be carried out in the first stage of development, which will also include a drag strip, airport with a 2km long runway, drift circuit, 100-room hotel, caravan park, 4wd track, and rally circuit.

“This is a grand and optimistic project and we need as many of these projects in our state as possible,’’ he said.

“The project will go ahead and over the last 18 months we have already invested considerable time and money already. The intention is with approval in mid April, there will be detailed documentation and bulldozers on site in the second half of the year.’’

The Advertiser revealed this month that V8 Supercars management is considering a second event at Tailem Bend to join Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 street-circuit race in 2016, pending approval and construction.

Design of the track has been years in the development, completed by a team including leading V8 Supercars designer, five-time championship winner, Mark Skaife.

“I have provided some specialist design concept work for Tailem Bend and high-level simulation, because design is now a very scientific process,’’ he said. “But it is more than a track or even a motorsport complex, it is a terrific business development for South Australia.

“Tailem Bend is a mixture of Phillip Island, Bathurst, and Oram Park. It will be a really fast and really committed racetrack as well as a great facility for South Australia.”

Five times world motorcycle champion Mick Doohan is an enthusiastic backer of the project after visiting the site yesterday. “I was blown away to be honest, the amount of initial work they have put into this and divisions they have is amazing,’’ he said.

Mr Shahin, a member of one of SA’s most successful business families and owners of the On the Run business, is a motorsport enthusiast.

V8 Supercars CEO Shane Howard joined a chorus of voices in support of the project.

“We are very supportive of the project being developed, and it is a very exciting concept,’’ Mr Howard said.

“We are committed to the Clipsal and it is a mega event, so we would have to have the support of the South Australian government as we have at Clipsal and run it as a second event.’’

Track designer Michael McDonough of M Track said he had been involved in both the Adelaide and Melbourne Grand Prix circuits and the Tailem Bend circuit would be considered “extraordinary’’ in its design and quality.

“The track is category 2 so that allows you to accommodate any category of motor racing vehicle except Formula One, and in terms of motorbike it will be a grade one circuit so it would be able to accommodate Moto GP if that was ever considered commercially,’’ he said.

Motor Accident Commission CEO Roger Cook said the Tailem Bend facility would also include driving training for motorists.

If Tailem Bend becomes SA's second round in the V8 Supercar series, I hope that it could be run early in the season and Clipsal 500 moved to later in the year, say in November (Grand Prix worked brilliantly in Nov) to spread out our event calendar a bit more.

There are no major events in Adelaide between the end of the football season and Christmas. But this time of year is perfect weather wise and I recall that people loved being out and about in the warm weather when the Grand Prix circus rolled into town!

A November Clipsal 500 could be combined with other Adelaide-based motoring events (Bay to Birdwood, Classic Adelaide rally etc) to create a weeklong Motorsport festival.

The Christmas Pageant (may not be your thing, but it attracts seriously large numbers to the city).

The pageant goes for... three hours on one day?

I think what ml69 is getting at that we need something that spreads out over the week. A motorsport festival seems like a good way to do it.

I like the idea of the Clipsal 500 shifting to later in the year, and a new Taliem Bend race taking place in Feb/March.

While they are at it, move the Adelaide Cup to a May weekend but keep the holiday in March.

That is not exactly true, OzAsia and Feast Festival take place in spring.

Alternatively, move the Clipsal 500 out to Tailem Bend and bring the F1 Grand Prix back to the city. Have them a week apart, which would entice most motor-sport fans to stay on in Adelaide from the Clipsal for the F1 GP a week later.

From ABC online:
Second SA V8 race will not detract from Clipsal in Adelaide: Confederation of Australian Motor Sport

A second V8 race to be held in South Australia's Murraylands will not detract from the Clipsal 500 street race in Adelaide, the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) says.

Tailem Bend Motorsport Park director Sam Shahin yesterday said he had signed an agreement with V8 Supercars to secure a race at the track by 2017 if a proposed $80 million upgrade of the racetrack, about one hour east of Adelaide, goes ahead.

It followed a Federal Government announcement to match a State Government commitment and pledge $7.5 million in funding for the park.

CAMS chief executive Eugene Arocca said the state was underrepresented on the V8 circuit and, if Victoria could support three races, SA could support two.

"We don't believe that when you've got a product as strong as Clipsal that a second race would detract from that, provided it's not in the following week or the following month," he said.

It would have to be timed appropriately but just as in Victoria where we have three races over eight months, there's no reason why South Australia couldn't have two races over eight months.

Adelaide's Clipsal 500 race takes place in March each year and is widely considered one the most successful and well-attended races on the Supercar circuit.

"It would have to be timed appropriately but just as in Victoria where we have three races over eight months, there's no reason why South Australia couldn't have two races over eight months," Mr Arocca said.

He said there were many "ground level" supporters for V8 Supercars and "it would be just as exciting and just as well supported" as the Clipsal.

Mr Shahin was confident that the second race at Tailem Bend would go ahead.

"We have a commitment, a signed commitment from V8 Supercars, to run a second V8 Supercar race in South Australia when this facility is finished," he said.

I swear this was posted this year, not in 2015. Bulldozers certainly didn't start working out there in Feb 2015..that was this year that site works like that began.
Is the forum software/servers playing up that badly? The other day I kept getting an SQL error..

Anyway, hopefully we can get a Superbike event here as well. There was talk of Australia having a second MotoGP event here in Adelaide/SA to go along with the Philip Island event.
Let's hope as well that the second Supercar event doesn't mean they'll ditch the Clipsal500, as some nimby's will be licking their lips hoping for. Would be a disgrace to not have a major race at one of the best street circuits(or variation of) in the world all because of a handful of knobs.

Does this mean I have to retire this?
