From The Messenger:
THIS is the first image of the proposed $200 million redevelopment of Westfield Marion, which will make the retail hub Australia's second-biggest shopping centre.
Viewed from Diagonal Rd, with the existing centre tower visible, the artwork shows the centre's facade has been moved forward to include new shops and cafes.
It also depicts a balcony on the second level, which caters for diners or shoppers, while also allowing for car parking underneath.
Although it is not visible in this sketch, a three-level car park and landscaping also is planned for the Diagonal Rd side of the shopping hub.
The redevelopment, which is planned to start in 2009 and be finished by 2010, means Westfield Marion will be second only to Melbourne's Chadstone shopping centre in size in Australia.
An extra 90 shops will be added to Marion's existing 270 businesses, along with an additional 900 car parks for a total of 6449 spaces.
The Guardian Messenger broke the news of the plans in April.
Westfield spokeswoman Julia Clarke could not be contacted before press time but said when the upgrade was announced the centre was due for an overhaul. ``It's typical for shopping centres to be redeveloped every five to seven years, and Marion was last redeveloped in 1997, so the centre is ready for an upgrade,'' she said.
T
he redevelopment must be approved by Marion Council before work can start.
