Very good news! I was expecting the rollout to be a slow burner as money is drip fed, so the fact they're going to just go the whole hog at once is a nice surprise.

Peter Allen said “everything old is new again”, and so it has been with Melbourne’s much-loved laneways over the 2000s. But are they really as interesting, fresh and engaging as they used to be, or has the sparkle faded?

Although based in Melbourne, I’ve travelled to Adelaide dozens of times over the past few years and am always intrigued to see a bit of colour and movement in the city’s laneways.

The current blank exterior of Her Majesty's Theatre on Pitt Street would make a perfect canvas for a stunning artwork.

Adelaide's Peel Street laneway a car-free small bars zone over summer



Peel Street in the Adelaide CBD will be closed to traffic over summer weekends to help attract more people to an area that has become a small bars hub.

A previous trial almost two years ago achieved a 30 per cent rise in pedestrian traffic at times, and there were fewer issues between people and vehicles in the laneway, authorities said.

City of Adelaide Minister John Rau the latest trial might pave the way for more regular closures of Peel Street to vehicle traffic.

"If it goes well — and all of the people involved in it are positive about it — I can't see any reason we wouldn't extend it," he said.

Mr Rau said about 14 venues would be operating in the city lane by Christmas, when "a couple of years ago all you could find was tumbleweed".

"We're trying to make sure that this street continues to grow, continues to develop," he said.

Leigh Street, another city lane nearby, was permanently closed to traffic in mid-2012, and the State Government recently made $14.6 million available to upgrade it and several other CBD lanes in the area, from the Central Market to the Riverbank.

So its basically a road with a few trees in the middle of it? Gee I hope the speed limit is 10kph! (just over walking pace)
They finally pulled the trigger on Peel Street.
Are the ACC that petrified of offending the car lobby that they cant just go the whole hog and make it a pedestrian only street?

2.deal with outcry from conservatives or people don't see a benefit directly to them.
3.scale back progressive idea to keep critics happy
4.roll out scaled down plan
5.once critics use prgressive idea and see how good it is, cop critisicm for not doing it properly in the first time
6.propose going ahead will full progressive policy
7.get hounded down for excessive consultation and wasting time.
8.roll out progressive policy.


In the case of the ACC and bikes they usually have a couple more steps
4.1 get indpedent review to confirm their plan
4.2 get another review if it disagrees with twhat they are considering
4.3 ignore review and do what they want anyway.

Its funny because its true. Also Sometimes there's the bit where the complainers get a half built piece of infrastructure and decide prematurely that it is a failure.
