And right on cue the Liberal fanatics are out in force bagging the hospital - some still believing the old site could simply be upgraded

Marhsall was also a noted absentee from the opening yesterday.
Can someone please tell me why the idea of redeveloping the original RAH seems to be looked down upon with such disdain? Is it genuinely a bad idea or is it a case of "Its a bad idea because the liberals came up with it".
The hospital needed redevelopment at a minimum. It's a hodge podge of old buildings with no integration. Integration is a big deal for a hospital. Nobody really fancies not having a hospital for 10 years while they build a new one. If they tackled it in stages then the timeframe would have been enormous.

A couple of people I know at the RAH right now commented that getting some patients from the ward to the ambulance to be ferried to the new RAH has actually been easier (logistically) than getting them to some corners of the current RAH. I say logistically because emotionally it's been rough. Lots of the patients were trembling and crying today. Only thing that calms lots of them down is telling them when they get to the new hospital they can see the Adelaide Oval through the windows.

The libs proposal was also very poorly executed and financially underestimated.

So glad to finally see the new RAH open after the constant saga for the past 12 months. Now bring on the bulldozers for the ORAH :)

In all fairness though, there was plenty of room behind the old rah where the new high school is going up, to build an entire new wing, move certain services there, knock down the building that used to have those services, rebuild, and so on.
Sure it would have taken longer, but it could have been done.
Problem is the Liberal party room is populated by mannequins with no brains. We here on S-A could have put together a better proposal and sold it to South Australian voters successfully.

Once all the remaining issues are ironed out, a lot are teething issues but many are not, things will be sweet.
Regardless of the issues that do exist, what we have at nRAH is a leap of many light years of the old RAH.
Nobody wants to visit a hospital, but once you do, you'll see how much better off we are. Even with a $1 million dollar a day bill for the next 25 years.

I wasn't far off. Today Steven Marshall announced one of their key policies at the election will be to reopen to the repat.... Where is their vision? Anyway, sorry this should be about the NRAH.

How pathetic not being there for the opening
Probably planning his press release to announce a new Royal Adelaide Hospital, a tram extension to East Terrace or a task force against terrorism :hilarious:

For what benefit though? Surely not cost or time so what would have been the point in going down that road?

Well, the old rail yards could have been used for many other purposes.
Looking at it now on GoogleMaps, how good would it have been if the convention centre was moved to the west of the Morphett bridge to the area north of the train lines and had the entertainment centre incorporated into it, and linked with a large pedestrian walkway/plaza over the rail lines, while the area between the intercontinental and bridge was turned into a casino-entertainment complex, and the current casino restored to a proper grand railway station with a boutique hotel on top or boutique high end shops above. I dunno I've got my own grand visions for the riverbank precinct and it pisses me off how under whelming it all is lol

I'm pretty sure that if the old RAH was slowly renovated (not) to the standard of the new RAH, apart from it taking longer and costing more, we would not have the SAHMRI building/s, and the two University medical buildings would not be built for many more years, if ever, as they would also necessitate demolishing existing buildings while the need for using them was still there. When it's all said and done, I think we went the right way.
cheers,
Rhino

The transition is complete.

Must say SA Health did an outstanding job with the move.

We have ourselves a brand spanking new hospital folks. Now none of this 'cough' 'cough' 'I'm sick' as an excuse to visit the ED 8)

Where would you have built the new university buildings and SAHMRI?
The site of the new uni medical buildings, sahmri and nrah and potentially sahmri 2 and new womens hospital, is convenient because besides the rail yards which were moved to Dry Creek and a little skate park, are/were underused. Work could begin immediately on the sites.
However if you look at the wider CBD it self, it's all largely flat and underused, and there's lots of little things that could be moved into larger(taller) premises, or into the suburbs. You also have a ring of underused and often dry/dead parklands surrounding the CBD.
I'm not arguing against the location of the nRAH and biomedical precinct, I'm more just thinking of what could of been/happened, as my personal belief is the whole river bank area between the wier and Adelaide Zoo should have been turned into a entertainment and stadia precinct. I mean, they did compare what they had planned to what's been done in Brisbane and Melbourne..but we got a hospital and conventional center expansion and some uni buildings. Hardly comparable.
The nRAH is a major asset we now have, as will be the whole precinct once completed. Those who were against the nRAH will change their tune when they have the unfortunate need for visiting the hospital.

I've heard a few people talk about this. I get the idea that people don't appreciated how much area that is. You're talking about a 2km stretch. Entertainment areas need to be a bit more compact and multi-use, otherwise it becomes a huge wasteland outside of events.
Exit on the right in the direction of travel.

a little skate park, are/were underused.
I wouldn't say that it was underused, most of the time there were people there, especially on weekends. A replacement nearby is desperately needed. It would get some of the kids off North Terrace and Victoria Square damaging the infrastructure. It would also make young people in Adelaide feel more valued, and we need to make sure they feel included here so we can retain talent in this state.

You can say that something doesn't best use the space it takes up, but spare us the ridiculously false claims that the skatepark was underused. It was always busy, and more often than not more people were on the tram heading to the skatepark rather than the uni campus directly opposite.
