Didn't want to bump the thread unnecessarily so just going to put a sad face in here that we haven't heard any hints in the past 5 months on how the delightfully named DOMINATOR 1 proposal has been tracking. Hopefully we'll either hear some details soon on either details or that it's dead.

Well considering Datong is in administration what do you think the likelihood of it proceeding is...

I didn't know that.

Shame, if the project is actually dead hopefully CDW can give us some hints on what was planned.

Hopefully an early render or something. With the name I imagine either something reminiscent of a giant dildo or something that looks sci fi and capable of unleashing destruction lol.

It's been said before, but if most of those over 100m towers get built it will make an insane difference to the city skyline.

If all of them are built it will take our current 1st and 2nd tallest buildings to 3rd and 9th place.

Do we have a list that shows current and future building heights above sea level (AHD) instead of ground level? It is absolute height that matters when viewing the city from a distance - for example, will Adelaidean look three metres taller than Realm when viewed from the elevated North-South Motorway? Or is the bottom more than three metres lower?

If that whole list were built then it would be basically a doubling of Adelaide's skyline from 15 years ago. Impressive. Goes without saying they won't all be built though... a few should drop off the list already

From tonight, work has started on the student accomodation project at 85-87 Gilbert Street. The carpark has been ripped up.

Looks like Anne Moran is up to her old tricks again!!! The council lost their powers for a good reason. They used their powers for evil and not for good. Pretty sure I can recall an old Chinese proverb that says "with great power comes great responsibility" ( )

I am not against more scrutiny in design. What I am against is the powers that be and their motives. When the ACC were stripped of their powers last time, I remember Anne Moran saying something along the lines of "and I would've gotten away with it too if it weren't for you meddling kids!" ( ). It shows me that she isn't being sincere and that she has ulterior motives.

Councillor Anne Moran wants Adelaide City Council to follow lead of Melbourne and push for bigger say on building designs
DEVELOPERS and architects would be subject to strict checks and balances on how their buildings impact city streets under a proposed Adelaide City Council plan..

Adelaide councillor Anne Moran is pushing for the council to follow the lead of Melbourne, and lobby the State Government to give it the ability to have a bigger say on what is built in the city — and the impacts of the design.

Following the release of the Central Melbourne Design Guide — the biggest rewrite of its city’s urban design policies for more than 20 years — the Melbourne City Council is pushing for the Victorian State Government to give city planners new rules to discourage developers from creating eyesores on the city streets.

This includes banning above-ground car parks in the CBD and fewer service doors placed on footpaths.

Mrs Moran said like Melbourne, Adelaide “has had a long period of unsympathetic development” encouraged in recent years as developers has not been held to a very high standard regarding their designs.

“There have been some similarities between what has happened to us and Melbourne in terms of planning, especially giving developers such a good run such as individual accreditation,” she said.

“And now Melbourne has decided that the pendulum has swung too far to the developers … it has become people unfriendly with the new developments happening there.

“We love Melbourne and it's a great place with some great designs but this had led to the slums of tomorrow, it has lost its edge.

“Melbourne is obviously ahead of us in term of investment and development so I think we can learn from the problems they have had and address this before its too late.”

Mrs Moran said examples of buildings that were a blight on Adelaide included the student accommodation on Waymouth St, previously dubbed “Adelaide’s ugliest building’, the problem-plagued Vue Apartments and the DWELL Adelaide student accommodation tower on Synagogue Place.

She said even previous large-scale designs for the former Le Cornu site in North Adelaide showed just how inappropriate designs were proposed for Adelaide.

“The council has already asked [Planning Minister] Stephan Knoll to raise the cap of what we can touch under the planning laws to $40 million so while we are looking at that I think we should look at this,” she said.

“It would be smart of the Adelaide City Council to stand on the shoulder of giants and use Melbourne’s push to help our city.”

Urban Development Institute chief executive Pat Gerace said he believed the state already had adequate safeguards.

“Part of the SCAP [State Commission Assessment Panel] process the Office of the Government Architect has their say on the design,” he said.

“South Australia already might be ahead of the game to look at what is fair.

“Councillor Moran might think otherwise but I think there is already a fairly good process to look at this.”

Mrs Moran will ask her fellow councillors to support her push at their meeting next week

Council not only approved the high rise parking garages destroying the fabric of the city - they also developed, owned and managed them for profit. No thanks ACC, you've had your chance.
