News & Discussion : New Restaurants, Bars & Night Clubs
Re: News & Discussion : New Restaurants, Bars & Night Clubs
What's the situation of the old HQ / Newmarket hotel site ?
Seems to have been dormant for the last couple of years.

The site had approvals for a high-rise hotel & office buildings etc. I think it was also a contender as a site for the new W&CH. I am wondering if the entertainment/liquor license was transferred/sold prior to the now closed HQ in Hindley St, if anyone knows?

The new bar at 162 Gilbert Street will be called “John Doe’s Local Bar” and will feature South Australian alcoholic drinks at a very low price.

I have heard Meat and Wine Co are opening their first restaurant here in the elders building redevelopment on Currie street.

Thanks for the post. Is that the place on the north western corner of Gilbert Street and Morphett? I tried to look it up on Google street view but it was a bit vague.timtam20292 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 2:58 amThe new bar at 162 Gilbert Street will be called “John Doe’s Local Bar” and will feature South Australian alcoholic drinks at a very low price.

This area has been my neighborhood for over 8 years now, i've seen Gilbert Street change quite a bit in that time. It's a quiet corner of town traffic and pedestrian wise, but with an ever increasing cool vibe for entertainment.

A few of these units at the station seem to be regularly closed, updated, open, then closed again. Pretty tough trading conditions at this time I expect.

Renewal SA apparently intends to more significantly renovate the tenancies at some point, so I presume these vendors are also only operating on a temporary/pop-up basis.
That said, as tough as trade is atm, the 'glamour bar' always seemed like a poor idea.

The new place in the former Jamie's Italian is now called 'Fishbank'.

John Doe’s is open for coffee. Won’t be serving alcohol until late September/early October.
