Not sure if its been mentioned anywhere but I noticed last week that the pedestrian crossing across the tracks behind North Adelaide Golf Course is still fenced off. This crossing was upgraded as part of the Gawler line works but still sits there unused. Anyone know why?

The pedestrian crossing was installed but fenced off at the time of the Torrens Junction works in 2018.

Is there expected to be a new timetable in place soon now that all services are electric along the Gawler line?

Yes, once all the active crossings have been turned on, because trains still have to crawl through those at 25km/h. Apparently this will be done by the end of the year. I really don't know why it's taking this long to enable them!

Commissioning of the active crossings requires modifications to the ARTC signalling with additional track circuits and axle counters. There seems to be a slow upgrade of the signalling happening. A new signal appeared at North Adelaide in 2018 but remains out of use. Recently cable trunking was laid at Dry Creek and a new LED signal was installed near Pym Street.

I suspect the delays are due either to the need to minimise disruption to the freight services or involve signal engineers from interstate.

It's been over a year since someone was killed at North Adelaide because the active crossing wasn't working. Whoever is responsible for the continued delays needs a massive kick up the arse.

There are a number of active crossings N of Salisbury which were installed and commissioned as part of the resignalling during the electrification closure. 9 active crossings were also installed S of Salisbury (where the ARTC track joins the metro tracks). 6 have been commissioned in the last 12 months (Ovingham(2), Parafield Gdns, Chidda(2), Brown St (Salisbury Sth)).

Active crossings are not the complete solution; I have seen several occasions where pedestrians have continued to cross after lights have started flashing or gates have closed!

The Northern active crossing was originally scheduled for commissioning in March but was delayed. It was operational in early June when I took a series of photos at the location. Axle counters have been used in the vicinity of the crossing whereas the Southern crossing uses track circuits.

Today I noticed a ditch for cable ducts has just been dug beside the ARTC track at the North Adelaide active crossing. A new ARTC Up signal is being installed at the N end of North Adelaide station.

They haven't appeared in the GTFSR realtime feed so they could still be testing. So far I 've seen 3009, 3017, 3121 and another 31xx (3122?) in hybrid livery around Dry Creek depot in recent weeks.

The announcement by the Government;

A quieter, more comfortable ride for commuters – a newly converted hybrid train – enters service today, the latest green technology to be rolled out on the Adelaide Metro network.
After a successful testing period, the hybrid-diesel train will be running on the Outer Harbor, Grange and Belair lines – instantly recognisable by its distinctive bright-green wrap.

Hybrid-diesel trains are quieter and release fewer fumes than traditional diesels trains, using up to 20% less fuel and providing a more comfortable journey for passengers.

Each rail car of this two-car train set has been fitted with an Energy Storage and Recovery System. These two cars are the first of 44 diesel railcars expected to be fitted with the hybrid system.

The Energy Storage and Recovery System works by recovering excess energy when the train brakes and storing it in a battery for later use.

The battery will also be used instead of the diesel engine to supply auxiliary loads – power for lighting and air-conditioning, for example – at the train platform within Adelaide Railway Station to reduce noise, emissions, and air pollution.

Installation of the Energy Storage and Recovery System on the remaining trains will be a phased roll-out, with all trains expected to feature the new system by late-2024.

Once fully installed, Adelaide Metro will save an estimated 2,400 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Adelaide Metro is also accelerating towards a greener future across its bus fleet, with two hydrogen buses hitting Adelaide’s streets in late August and the state’s first full battery electric bus expected to starting taking passengers by the end of October.

Both battery electric and hydrogen powered buses offer a range of benefits for passengers, including a smoother ride, reduced noise and fuel-based pollution.

The Malinauskas Labor Government is transitioning the Adelaide Metro system to a zero-emissions public transport system to support the net zero emissions by 2050 target.

Look, I think these are a great idea but….. why must they look so horrible?

I assume the colour scheme is just for promotional purposes on this one test train and isn't going to be rolled out to the whole fleet.
