FUTURE ENERGY WEEK: BIG BATTERY POWERS TONSLEY INNOVATION DISTRICT

Tonsley Innovation District – already a leader in renewable energy production – is another step closer to relying entirely on renewable energy sources with the installation of a giant battery.

The 4 MWh lithium-ion battery will store excess energy created by Tonsley’s 13,000 solar panels, which generate more than 7,000 MWh per year from the Main Assembly Building roofline and provide around 60% of the District’s current energy needs during daylight hours.

With enough storage capacity to power 200 average households for a day, the battery is the biggest one ever to be installed in South Australia by specialist renewable energy company and Tonsley tenant CleanPeak Energy and will be used to provide energy across the District outside of daylight hours, including the homes of Tonsley Village residents, which feed into the Tonsley microgrid.

Planned future stages of the battery’s delivery will take its capacity to 10 MWh.

The battery was switched this week as part of the 2023 Future Energy Week conference held at the Tonsley Innovation District and featuring speakers including Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen MP, Deputy Premier Susan Close, Minister for Energy and Mining Tom Koutsantonis MP and Flinders University Principal Sustainability Strategist William Van Ausdal.

"Since its inception, Tonsley has positioned itself as a world-leader in sustainability, becoming Australia’s first urban renewal development to receive the internationally-recognised 6 Star Green Star Communities Certification. It is fantastic to see CleanPeak Energy and Renewal SA leading by example with this battery. The timing of its completion as we come together for Future Energy Week underlines the strength and quality of innovation that is happening here at Tonsley and in South Australia. "

CleanPeak Energy owns and operates Tonsley Innovation District’s energy scheme in the form of a microgrid. The new battery takes the company’s total investment at Tonsley past $30 million.

"This is an important project for us as it is the largest battery we have installed behind the meter anywhere in Australia. It will deliver a number of important benefits to Tonsley. The battery will be charged with solar energy generated on site that would otherwise be exported to the grid and made available for use across Tonsley during other times. It will also reduce congestion in the network by taking excess solar out of the system and storing it for use at the site during the evenings. It moves us closer to realising our ambition to power the site from 100% renewable sources, delivering a Net Zero strategy for the Tonsley precinct. "

The Tonsley community includes around 2,000 people employed across 140 organisations as well as 8,500 students and more than 600 residents who are set to use power that is almost completely generated by renewable sources.

Tonsley has become South Australia’s hub for renewable energy and clean tech innovation, bringing together business and research institutes to power the energy transition.

The Government of South Australia’s Climate Change Action Plan pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 per cent by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Future Energy Week – delivered by the Tonsley Future Energy Consortium – is a series of events designed to showcase the best and brightest in energy while connecting organisations with current and emerging innovators who are contributing to the clean energy transition.

Further business tenants at Tonsley

TONSLEY OPENS FRESH WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY FOR ADELAIDE BLIND COMPANY

Rapidly expanding South Australian company ScreenAway will establish a new national headquarters at Tonsley Innovation District to drive growth and capitalise on opportunities to innovate, collaborate and attract talent.

The leading provider of in-home retractable block-out blinds will break ground on a new $6 million facility this year after securing a 3700m2 site on Edison Road.

The new ScreenAway facility will effectively double the company’s existing footprint, providing more space for the manufacturing of its revolutionary blinds and flyscreens, along with R&D, warehousing and offices.

ScreenAway Managing Director Dan O’Rourke said the move follows a 12-month search for a new premises after outgrowing its current set up at Regency Park.

"We had originally planned to set up operations in Gepps Cross, but I was at a networking event, and someone suggested I consider Tonsley. I had a look and realised straight away that’s where we had to be. "

“As soon as you walk in, you can tell that Tonsley is geared towards growth and ideas. When you are a high value manufacturing company committed to innovating and investment in R&D, it makes a lot of sense to be in a community where the sole purpose is to incubate ideas and harvest them into cutting edge technologies and products.

“You’ve got companies like REDARC and SAGE with their R&D, you’ve got Tesla there as well – the collaboration and networking opportunities are very exciting.”

ScreenAway has quadrupled its revenues over the past four years and its national workforce is nearing 100. The company has built on its traditional product line with a new focus on providing solutions for architecturally designed buildings where larger and more complex screens are often required.

The move to Tonsley is fundamental to ScreenAway’s continued growth, with a target to double revenue in two years.

"To achieve that growth, we’ll obviously need more people in the factory, in the head office and also outside the office, selling and installing, We’re hoping that one of the benefits of co-location with Flinders University and TAFE SA at Tonsley is that it gives us direct access to job-ready staff who can come in and be part of our team. "

Renewal SA Executive Director, Property and Major Projects, Todd Perry said Tonsley was the perfect location to facilitate ScreenAway’s expansion, providing it space to grow whilst also creating new employment opportunities for South Australians with diverse skill sets.

"Tonsley was ultimately established to bring lost jobs back to South Australia, so helping facilitate the upscaling of a company like ScreenAway really delivers on Tonsley’s vision to return jobs to an area so synonymous with industry,"

Renewal SA Executive Director, Property and Major Projects, Todd Perry

“It also has the potential to add dozens of indirect jobs to the supply chain, spilling over into the surrounding suburbs, so it plays a bigger role in the overall economic impact in the southern suburbs,” Mr Perry said.

He said Tonsley continues to present a unique opportunity for companies looking to stay ahead of the curve. “Tonsley is world-renowned for attracting people who share a passion for driving change.”

“The precinct provides a vibrant and dynamic environment that promotes creativity, fosters collaboration and encourages the exchange of ideas, helping businesses to bring new and innovative products, services and solutions to market faster,” Mr Perry said.

The new ScreenAway facility is expected to be completed by June 2025. Mr O’Rourke said his team could not wait to call Tonsley home, energised by its offerings, including the Mantra Tonsley Adelaide hotel.

"We fly all our staff in from around the country for training and conferences, so the hotel is ideal."

ScreenAway Managing Director Dan O’Rourke

“The idea that I can soon say ‘come on team,’ and walk down to the breakout spaces in the MAB [Main Assembly Building] with the beautiful gardens to have a meeting…it’s pretty special.

“We’re also very appreciative of how Renewal SA spent the time to understand our business and work with us on the solution. Personally, I feel very privileged to be accepted and to be able to join the district.”

About ScreenAway

ScreenAway’s retractable prototype was first conceived in 2013, as a practical way to clean windows without the need to fully remove the supporting flyscreen. The functionality was soon added to the company’s suite of block-out blind products, creating the ability to turn a room from day to night in an instant – an industry gamechanger, particular for shift workers.

The made-to-measure product directly seals the blind’s fabric within a window frame on all sides, eliminating the need for exposed cords or external pulleys or rollers and preventing light from getting in around the edges. It can be retrofitted into most types of windows, old and new, is easy to clean and has been lauded for its user-friendly design and child safety rating.

ScreenAway’s products are available for installation in Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Perth.

OILPATH MOVING TO TONSLEY

Precision manufacturer Oilpath will build a new $7 million engineering and manufacturing facility at the Tonsley Innovation District as it gears up to capitalise on strong growth in key industry sectors.

The company designs and manufactures specialised componentry for hydraulic control systems – effectively, the brains that manage hydraulic functions in machinery – for the mining, defence, agriculture and logistic sectors.

Oilpath’s solutions are used across a wide range of functions, from large-scale agricultural equipment such as harvesters and sprayers, through to controlling the underwater fins on naval vessels and in the harsh environment of Australian mines. The company’s hydraulic technology is also installed on at least 70% of all tipper trucks operating in Australia.

Oilpath has been operating out of Edwardstown for almost 50 years and rapid recent growth has resulted in the company outgrowing its current premises, creating the need to build a bespoke facility at the intersection of Tonsley Boulevard and MAB Circuit.

At nearly 3000m2, the new factory will effectively double the company’s existing manufacturing floorspace and will incorporate a two-storey engineering hub to support its research and development, technical support and quality divisions.

The building has been designed to defence industry standards to enable Oilpath to take on more complex defence contracts. It will be a truly advanced digital factory aligning with the federal ambition to grow sovereign manufacturing capability, with Oilpath boasting more than 90% Australian content in its solutions.

“We are growing at around 20% year on year, and we are at absolute capacity at our current premises,” Oilpath CEO Stephen McKee said.

“Our ambition is to take the next bold step in Oilpath’s 50-year history, and establishing our new headquarters in a flagship innovation district surrounded by like-minded businesses is a sure way to set ourselves up for our future. Tonsley will allow us to attract and retain the best people to accelerate our growth and bring us into the ‘age of data’ as we evolve our technology roadmap. Our goal is to provide advanced hydraulic solutions which will give our customers access to predictive maintenance and multiple other forms of remote intelligence.”

The new facility will give Oilpath the scope to increase its workforce from 35 to up to 60 in coming years.

"Oilpath is a proud South Australian company and sees partnership and collaboration as the way forward"

Chief Financial Officer of Oilpath, and Director at Inventure Partners, Callan Rogers said.

“Being neighbours with prestigious centres of knowledge such as Flinders University and working next to leading edge companies including BAE Systems, SAGE Automation, REDARC and many more, will have a catalytic effect on our ability to grow from a technology perspective.”

Tonsley’s advanced manufacturing credentials are underpinned by Flinders University’s Factory of the Future – Australia’s first industrial-scale high-value manufacturing research and accelerator facility with partners such as BAE – which is located within the District’s Line Zero building.

“The Tonsley Innovation District is now home to a critical mass of advanced manufacturing expertise,” Renewal SA Executive Director, Major Projects and Property, Todd Perry said.

"Companies like Oilpath are recognising not just the huge collaborative opportunities at Tonsley but also the immeasurable benefits of an employment ecosystem that is attracting the workforce of the future."

Construction on the new Oilpath facility is anticipated to commence in the first quarter of 2024 with the company moving in early 2025.
