I thought this development deserved its own thread now that it has been granted Ministerial Approval.

Because the land is owned by the Commonwealth Adelaide Airport Limited requires approval by The Minister for Transport, Regional Development and Local Government. Where this differs from State Government or Council approval is that the Minister has not approved a particular design but instead, granted approval on the basis that one of the submitted design models is used. The designs are really only a guide as to the final look and feel of the development and as long as AAL and the developers stay within the conditions set down by the Minister, they require no further formal approvals.

MEDIA RELEASE
The Hon Anthony Albanese MP
Minister for Infrastructure, Transport,
Regional Development and Local Government
16 October 2008
AA153/2008

CONDITIONS ON ADELAIDE AIRPORT HOTEL DEVELOPMENT

I have approved a new hotel development at Adelaide Airport, subject to strict adherence to conditions that will ensure the design remains within the parameters of the details submitted by Adelaide Airport Limited.

I have imposed eleven stringent conditions on the project, which include measures to ensure the construction of the hotel has a minimal impact on the environment and operations of the airport.

Because the hotel is to be located close to the terminal, I have placed conditions that will ensure the building will not compromise the safety of aircraft and passengers.

The Rudd Labor Government is determined to ensure State and local governments have enough say in what gets built at our leased federal airports.

During my assessment of the MDP, I asked Adelaide Airport Limited to provide additional detail about the appearance of the building. I also required that the developer share this information with, and seek feedback from, State and local governments.

The proposed hotel is to be built on an existing car park adjacent to nearby car parking and close to major access roads. It will feature up to eight floors accommodating 200 rooms, up to 400 parking spaces; conference rooms, dining facilities and a gymnasium.

Adelaide Airport Limited proposes to tender the development.

Adelaide Airport Limited identified consistent growth in occupancy rates for hotel accommodation in Adelaide. The hotel will fill a need for transient accommodation in South Australia's capital city, and is likely to be used by staff and clients of companies located at the airport, as well as domestic business and regional travellers.

Now comes the challenge of securing financing for the project.

AAL have the funds. The airport is profitable and every time you park there, grab a taxi, take off or land ther, you pay them a charge.

Will be a good development for the airport and for adelaide. I just wish the new multi-story car park would also get moving. The place gets really busy some days.

Whereabouts is that going to be?

And what is happening to the old terminal?

This Airport will become a lot more impressive once this hotel is built, plus the multi-story carparks, this hotel also looks waaaay bigger than the previous proposal which looked like it would just take up a small space on one of the carparks, but i much prefer this new design

wasn't this the original proposed hotel?

The above designs are only really concepts as the final design has not yet been decided on. Reading through the submission there is also a chance that AAL may go with what they are calling a 'Linear design' which im guessing will have less height and more bulk. Either way they are restricted to a 37m heigh development to reduce interference from airport radar systems and ensure that the view from the yet to be built control tower will be uncompromised.

The development is said to be worth about 20mil but it will lead to a further 80mil of infrastructure works which will eventually include a new multi-deck car park.

This gives you an idea as to the location

The old domestic terminal may be turned into a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) base for airlines that predominatly operate mining charter flights. such as Alliance & National Jet. The old international terminal will soon be demolished to make way for more aircraft parking and aerobridges.

Article on this week's Adelaide Review with the GM of the airport explaining their Master plan. It includes the 2 additional airbridges, the 2000 car multi-level carpark and the hotel as well as some other works. Mention of a new restaurant near teh entrance and (hopefuully!!!) a new home for the lovely Vickers Vimy that has so much history and is hidden away now. Plus demolising teh old terminal and maybe using that area for charter / mining flights.

Should be a lot better. The airport carpark has been full this week and really hard to find a park. Also, the way that traffic is held up for people crossing the road into the airport entrance is pretty frustrating for everyone, so being able to enter the terminal at the departures level will be much better.

Bring it on, I say.

An article about this in yesterday Advertiser saying this proposal has been cancelled due to being unable to secure finance. They said they may re look at the proposal in a few years when conditions improve.

Demand will be greater in the economic upturn, and that way they can restructure it to suit the increased demand; ie: bigger hotel.

Technically, this hotel development was never cancelled. In the latest issue of Adelaide Airport's Plane Talking they point to renewed interest in the progression of this project next year.

Adelaide Airport Limited have submitted details of a minor variation to the approved hotel plans. The only change is that the orientation of the building will now sit paralell with the T1 building and not at a 45 degree angle from it. This minor ammendment is expected to be approved.
