How exactly would building a new venue that's smaller than what's already available attract big acts? Surely something with more capacity would be built if the big acts are what is being chased...rhino wrote:When the big name acts weren't coming to Adelaide, in the 1980s, no-one was saying that Private Enterprise should build a venue to get them here - on the contrary, everyone was saying that the Government should build a venue. That venue got built, and now, two decades later, needs upgrading, or once again we will not have a modern venue and we will miss out on events as a consequence. Private consortiums didn't want to build the venue then, they don't want to build it now. Is that acceptable, should we just throw our hands in the air and say "C'est la Vie"? That won't last long - before you know it there'll be more petitioning for the Government to build us a better venue. I don't think it's a waste of taxpayers' money at all. It's something Adelaide needs, that no private company wants to build.Shuz wrote:Whilst the lighting looks good; it doesn't take away from how much of a waste of taxpayer's money this project has been.

Perhaps a full smaller venue is more profitable (and looks better) than a less-full larger one? Others might know - does the Entertainment Centre generally sell-out for major acts, or are many bays left empty?

Location.
I'm a fan of city locations, but have you been to Festival Hall in Melbourne? I'm not saying it's the same distance from the Melbourne CBD as AEC is to the Adelaide CBD, but it wasn't smack bang in the centre of the city, but it serviced by public transport and that didn't seem to detract from the experience.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the new venue in addition to a re-vamped existing venue? This means the AEC can cater for a greater variety of performances, some of which won't attract a crowd large enough to fill the larger venue, but are worth having, all the same. I really don't think this new smaller venue is going to be a white elephant.peas_and_corn wrote: How exactly would building a new venue that's smaller than what's already available attract big acts? spot on rhino, it's a smaller addition and a fantastic injection for music and the arts in our state.rhino wrote:Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the new venue in addition to a re-vamped existing venue? For those that don't understand, this caters for artists that are too big to play thebby theatre as the potential for ticket sales exceeds availability. However the Entertainment centre is too big, meaning availability exceeds demand. the venue is for 'mid range' artists like the biggest metal bands and the worst pop artists. lol

Looks like this new venue is going to be called AEC Theatre. I saw it
advertised today.

Drove past last night and while the dome wasn't lit up the big rectangular panel was and it was impressively bright, lighting up even the other side of Port Road. Once everything is finished up that precinct is going to look fantastic.
