Woodville North was known as Finsbury for some time - the Finsbury Hotel was there, and the railway to the area was known as the Finsbury Line.
Elizabeth Field became Davoren Park, I believe the reason was that it was outside the City of Elizabeth, in Munno Para Council, which felt that it needed to be differentiated - of course now it's all part of the City of Playford.
Challa Gardens was around Blair Athol - the Challa Gardens Hotel is still there I think.
Knightsbridge was along Glynburn Road somewhere, IIRC. There is a street and a park with that name along there, around Hazelwood Park.
Kircaldy was between Henley Beach and Grange - the western end of Grange Road was still called Kircaldy Road when I was a kid.
The southern part of Aberfoyle Park used to be called Chandlers Hill.
Paralowie used to be part of Salisbury North until someone thought that the new housing estate would be stigmatised with that name, and Paralowie sounded so much nicer.
Parts of Hallet Cove were almost called Karara, but residents voted to retain the name Hallet Cove. My work was involved with doorknocking that one.
Pasadena used to be called Centennial Park, IIRC. The local Scout Group was still the Centennial Park Sea Scouts when I was growing up.
The suburb of Colonel Light Gardens used to be it's own little council, and still splits Daw Park in two.
Huntfield Heights used to be part of Hackham West.
Old Noarlunga was just Noarlunga when I was a kid, and West Lakes was part of Tennyson.
Seaford Meadows and Seaford Rise were part of Moana.

That's all I can think of for now :)
cheers,
Rhino

I wonder why so many suburbs have had their names changed?, excluding places like Paralowie, Huntfield Heights etc..

A lot of them were the names of subdivisions (developments), many of which were not large enough (area) and so were merged into the neighbouring suburb as they grew. A bit like if Blakes Crossing became it's own suburb, but it's really a subdivision, or development, within Blakeview.

With regard to Finsbury, the Finsbury Press (printers) was there for many years too, but has since moved to newer premises at Thebarton (kept the name, however). I also remember Finsbury Engineering on Torrens Road.

And land was reserved for a rail corridor linking Finsbury to Islington (another ex suburb), but AIUI lack of funding prevented the track from ever being laid.
The southern part of Aberfoyle Park used to be called Chandlers Hill.
Chandlers Hill is still a suburb, so at most this was only a boundary change.
Parts of Hallet Cove were almost called Karara, but residents voted to retain the name Hallet Cove. My work was involved with doorknocking that one.
The developers called it the Karrara Estate, and the name stuck because local businesses used it.

Did residents actually get to vote on calling the area Karrara? I know at one stage there was a proposal for the area N of the old railway to secede from Hallett Cove, but IIRC the Geographical Names Board were unhappy (because there's a Karrara interstate*) and suggested calling it something like Karaeildun, which was universally unpopular with residents.

* WA, I think. There's also a Carrara on the Gold Coast, but that wasn't the reason for their objection.

There is still a suburb called Chandlers Hill, but it's a rural suburb (the definition of suburb being "A Bounded Locality", i.e. a place that has a defined boundary). The original village of Chandlers Hill with the general store and one or two other shops, which I can remember from my childhood, was merged into Aberfoyle Park when that suburb was developed.

Karara was indeed the name of a subdivision within Hallet Cove, and because of the size of the suburb of Hallett Cove, it was suggested that the the area be split into Hallett Cove and Karara. The old Lands Department (of which the Geographical Names Board was a part) did indeed doornock the area to get an idea of support for the name change, but there was not enough support. This is more likely the reason that the name was dropped, as there is a plethora of examples of names being mirrored interstate.

Hallett Cove is miles better than Karara, so that's pleasing.

not a suburb, but on the way to the riverland, there is a little sign between Truro and Blachtown introducing Annadale

I can never find any information about it - always wonder if it was a town that never was or just an area.

I believe that some of the developers behind newport quays wanted to change the name
of some of the Port Adelaide suburbs - (in a similar way to how The Levels was renamed
Mawson Lakes).

Also its funny how on North East road there's a football club called Gaza. Possibly
there might have been a suburb there called Gaza.

I think you'll find that Gaza was an old suburb that got merged into Klemzig.

In the 2011 UBD Street Directory there is a suburb called New Port (2 words) where the Newport Quays development lies.

Makes no sense whatsoever. Why keep Hahndorf if that was the case?

Renaming
Due to anti-German sentiment during the First World War, the name of Klemzig was changed, as were many other German place names in Australia at the time. Between 1917 and 1935, Klemzig was renamed to Gaza, commemorating the British victory in the Third Battle of Gaza, in which Australian troops had a major role.[2] Though it reverted to its original name in 1935, through South Australia's Nomenclature Act of 1935, the local football club still bears the Gaza name. Klemzig kept its original German name throughout the Second World War.

Weird that so many changed their names back to the Gernam version just prior to world war II. Bet they regretted that decision a few years later.
