ICYMI.
Great story about a massive mural painted on a Coonalpyn Silo, putting this small Coorong township (on the Dukes Highway) on the map. The art silos have given the town and local community a welcome social and economic boost.

The artist used a cherry picker to paint the 30 metre high silos and used 5 local children as subjects to promote his "futures" theme.
Australia's largest and arguably most complex mural has been finished, with artist Guido van Helten putting the final touches on the silos at Coonalpyn in South Australia

The artist, Guido van Helten ... said the children represented the future of the town, and he hoped the giant art work might inspire those children and others "to a path through creative industries".

...the town loved their new artwork. And the ambitious exercise is already paying dividends, with an increased number of cars passing through town stopping and spending their money there.

"The stopping rate is 40 per hour and we're getting lots of great feedback from the businesses because everyone is benefitting."
In a main street peppered with closed shops, two new businesses have opened on the back of the increased trade — a cafe and a grocery store.
The painting of the 30-metre silos was the flagship project in an arts-renewal program called Creating Coonalpyn.

The aim was to attract more visitors to the struggling farming town, and bring the community together through art.
"The social benefit of these sort of community arts projects are enormous and we've already seen a massive shift in terms of civic pride..."

Should it stay or should it go
Almost a year after plans for a redevelopment of the Bridgeport Hotel became public, the same old issues are holding up the development.

New Tailem Bend Housing Developments Proposed

Coorong Council is assessing two housing development plans in Tailem Bend.

Property investment group ‘Asset Point Proprietary Limited’ has filed plans for a large plot of land in the town’s south-east, not far from the local Bowling Club.

If approved, the lot would will be subdivided to create 80 homes, over five stages of development.

In a seperate plan lodged with Council in March, 20 rural living blocks have been proposed at Racecourse Road, by the company ‘Clandene Pty Ltd’, While Coorong Council is planning its own 20-lot development at the former tennis club on Tenth Street.

It's 120 homes across the three developments...

The problem with opening the railway station for The Overland is what would make it cost-effective? There must be some cost in just slowing the weight of the train down to stop and getting it going again. There's also the cost that (assuming it's mostly used for Tailem Bend-Adelaide trips), someone has to pay to transport those non-revenue seats from Tailem Bend to Melbourne and back again. It might make sense if The Overland also has potential to (or already does) fill those seats between Nhill (or somewhere else in Victoria) and Melbourne so they're only empty for the flat bit in the middle.

A new intercity railcar service from Tailem Bend, stopping at Murray Bridge, Monarto South, Nairne (near the back end of Mount Barker), Balhannah, Mount Lofty (Stirling) and Adelaide (new standard gauge track into the main station) could be interesting. I don't know how it could slot in to the gaps in the freight timetables.

So it would potentially be available for day trips on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but not Fridays or Sundays which would be a killer for trying to reuse it for an event train. It would be more likely to be able to rent some rolling stock from New South Wales for occasional events perhaps.

With the opening of the drag strip, it's probable that there will be 5-6 significant events annually exclusively dedicated to drag racing.

Running a train up there for events such as the Supercars weekend, would be a good test to see if it's going to be utilized at all.
I'm sure some local may decide to jump on the train and head into Adelaide for example that weekend and come back, depending on how often it would be running on those days of the Supercars. Wouldn't envisage a small town like that would see significant patronage so it might only be worth running trains up there during major events like the Supercars and anything else The Bend complex manages to attract. Would certainly add to the viability of drawing more major events to the complex, which can only be a good thing for the wider economy.

Which party might want to suck up to Sam Shahin enough to put the money and effort into:
  • Negotiating track modifications and access with ARTC
  • A Siding loop at Elwomple opposite The Bend
  • A standard gauge (or dual gauge) branch into Adelaide Railway Station
  • New rolling stock
  • Track adjustments (sidings/passing loops/realignments) to position the train next to the required intermediate station platforms as the freight lines have now mostly been moved to provide greater clearance.
I hesitate to guess the cost of all of that, but I doubt it's cheap. People will complain it's diverting money away from health and roads.
