The crane is being taken down as we speak. I walked passed the site only a few minutes ago (and got a few photos to boot) and noted that both lanes of Hindley Street have been closed off with traffic being diverted either to North Terrace or to Currie Street up Rosina Street. The jib has been taken down and is currently being dismantled with some of the jib having already been taken away. The cab and main tower are still in place though.

Any idea's where this crane is likely to end up? My personal (and most likely incorrect) bet is that for a crane of that size, is to end up on 374-400 King William Street.

Ive always wondered whether private construction companies/developers have to pay anything to the ACC or Dept of Transport (DTEI) to completely block a road off from traffic. Im curious, anyone know?

Some of the balconies are starting to be installed so it is looking much better

large advert in todays paper. This is now called UniLodge @ Metro Adelaide, and will be home to 430 students as from the start of the next year.

It also claims that there will be a 60% rise in the international student population in the next few years, and atm, 7500 students are trying to fit into 2500 suitable beds

If we can come by this info, why is there not more planned resi blocks than what is going on ATM.? Seems Spire is guaranteed of a market, but if we are short 5000 beds, where are the resi blocks to match? :? Plenty of potential it would seem. However, I have read there is not much planned in the way of high rise in the near future. :( :(

thats right, and that one consists of two, 18 level level towers.
Theres also ipad nearing completetion, and the proposed/approved Azucar aptmnts.

I bet large scale projects like these would be hard to get finance for, especially when the banks are based in Syd/Melb, and we all know their thoughts about Adelaide. I doubt developers would make a killing out of student stuff, compared to luxury aptmts, but Im just assuming. Now it would be even harder with the credit-crunch

I have no love for this building whatsoever. I've tried banishing it from Verona, but I fear that won't make any difference.

I recognise and acknowledge the above projects but can't come to their covering the extra 5000 students we need accommodation for. This is what I was getting at in my last post - there does not seem to be enough to cater for the extra requirements in the near future.

jk1237 - you may have a point with the shortage of money and that nasty attitude to Adelaide, but it seems student accommodation has been economically feasable enough to produce the towers we are getting. The apartment market has slowed down nationally, but not student accommodation here.WE have the demand - the only acceptable reason IMO is shortage of money - but even that could be offset by the guaranteed student market - especially if from OS.

BTW - I have the same feelings to this project as you Omi.

You're not alone, I've tried to like this building, it's just located behind from where I work, I look at it every day and would not appreciate what has been produced. The colours are bad, the verandahs/awnings are the ugliest to have been included.

Still not the best development, but a couple renders do it more justice than our initial perception.

Well i must say that at least this brown lump fits in beautifully with the other brown lumps in that corner of town. Quite an achievment.
