Rod Hook - major project planning is "fundamentally flawed"

It's a bit over a week old, but still very pertinent. Rod Hook tells a design conference that our planning is "fundamentally flawed", and announces a budget figure prior to the design. It reminds me of some of the things that Bent Flyberg has said about public works going wildly over-budge...

[COM] Re: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment Thread - Now Includes Poll!

I must say, I'm finding the whole issue of sports economics much more interesting than I ever did in the past. Take for instance the report from the South Australian Centre for Economic Studies mentioned by SJ - we aren't given access to the report itself (that was paid for by the SMA, so it's up to...

Re: Adelaide loses Rugby 7s to Gold Coast

I would imagine that the AFL's expansion in the traditional rugby states may have more to do with this decision than the state of Adelaide Oval. The ARU may be feeling that they need to shore up their supporter base. After all, 5 years over here hasn't led to a surge in interest in the game (success...

Re: News: Adelaide City Council

If it's a safety measure, why did they not use temporary fencing / barriers as they have on other projects? The King William Street repaving, for example.

[COM] Re: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment Thread - Now Includes Poll!

The SANFL has said that it requires control over the precinct and the car parking revenues in order for the move for it to be viable. Consistent, once again, with the story laid out in Public dollars, private stadiums - the parking is the bit that actually makes money, even more than the ticket or ...

If they're prepared to jump down from and climb up to a station platform, I dread to imagine what sort of fence would be needed to stop them.

Re: News: Adelaide City Council

Hi Councilors, Just wondering about the new fences down the median strip of Grenfell. What are there purpose and will these extend down the entire street? I Personally think it detracts from the already poor amenity of the street. Further to Ben's question, I am particularly curious to know what th...

[COM] Re: APP Rundle Pl/Bendigo Adel Bank, Harris Scarfe, Coles 72

i just had a look in my lunch break and the council? has installed permanent fencing down the centre of grenfell Street similar style to that of the Gallipoli underpass. I assume this is in response to a crackdown on Jay walkers but really ruins the already poor amenity of the street. Crackdown on ...

[COM] Re: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment Thread - Now Includes Poll!

The govt. doesn't give away money for nothing. $100m + per year is the estimated worth of the increased activity in the city. Even if that is reduced to take away what is not being spent at West Lakes, sooner than later, it will more than pay for itself. ... More money in the city and in turn the g...

[COM] Re: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment - General Discussion Thread

probably right, but indirectly our lack of decision making leaves us in a position for melbournians to designate US "no hope" CITY. You're right, a lot of them couldn't care less about whats happening in Adelaide but many will also label Adelaide as a "nothing going on" town wit...

[COM] Re: General Rundle Mall Development & Progress Thread

Borders Rundle Mall has fallen victim to the liquidation of the company nation wide. It's a bit sad, I liked the rabbit warren feel of the store. It's much more intimate than the supermarket feel many others have. http://www.smh.com.au/business/borders-closures-spells-end-for-500-jobs-20110406-1d4c...

I think that comparing AO to the Sydney Opera House is drawing a very long bow. When Utzon designed the opera house back in 1955, it was almost unique in the world; there was, quite literally, nothing like it anywhere. Like Bilbao 40 years later, that combination gives a real opportunity to change t...

[COM] Re: Adelaide Oval Redevelopment - General Discussion Thread

Frankly, I don't care one way or the other on developing the oval per se . I'm not in the target market for football or cricket; that said, I did take the family to see Adelaide United at the oval back in January, we sat in the new stand and had a good time (didn't hurt that it was a good game, of c...
