1650 residential alotments yeah? Hopefully we can have approx 500 of these developments take place so the conservative majority in Adelaide can retire out there* and let us get on with our lives.




*except for the ACC councilors. They wouldn't know were Mile End is, let alone the copper coast.

New ferry for Australia launched at Philippines shipyard

FBMA Marine Inc, shipbuilders based in Cebu, Philippines have just launched hull 1023 – SEASCAPE 1 - a 50m all aluminium Ropax ferry for the new South Australian operator Sea SA..

SEA SCAPE 1 will replace the existing vessel SEAWAY – built by FBMA in 2003– on the new South Australian route crossing between Wallaroo and Lucky bay on the Spencer Gulf.

The vessel is designed by the naval architects company Sea Transport Solutions in Queensland who developed their well proven catamaran designs to meet the route and infrastructure requirements in South Australia. Using an innovative all aluminum design this new vessel will provide the operator with an efficient modern ferry for the 6 daily crossings.

Sea Scape 1 continues FBMA Marine success in constructing aluminum and steel vessels for the Australian ferry market. Speaking at the launch – managing director of FBMA Marine – Mr. Doug Border stated that Sea Scape 1 further underlines the high quality of shipbuilding skills available in the Philippines. He added that this innovative vessel design has also attracted serious interest from other operators who are keen to maximize their capital expenditure along with lower operational costs.

Mr. Border added "this vessel is the successful outcome of teamwork and partnership between the operator, designer and shipyard" and wished them every success in it its operation.

SEA SCAPE 1 will now undergo a series of sea trails before commencing her approx 5000 mile delivery voyage to the Spencer Gulf in Australia.

Sea SA operates ferry services across the Spencer Gulf, between Wallaroo on the Yorke Peninsula and Lucky Bay (near Cowell) on the Eyre Peninsula.

FBMA Marine is an experienced builder of steel and aluminum vessel based in Cebu, Philippines. FBMA have supplied a range of vessel to clients worldwide – including recently a large Ropax ferry for Holland, 2 ropax ferries for Australia and 2 hi tech SWATH crew vessels for Lockheed Martin.

Well just took the ferry for the first time - must say I was quite impressed with it. While it was a bit rough (new ferry soon will fix that) it did mean I could arrive at Cleve fresh and alert. The time saved was probably minimal in the overall scheme of things, but to get there in comfort and refreshed was a huge benefit.

The extra bonus is the food and drink onboard was well priced - $2.50 for a can of drink and not $8.

Early trouble for Eyre Peninsula ferry

There were significant delays for holidaymakers heading to the Eyre Peninsula today.
The new Seascape ferry left Wallaroo on schedule early this morning, but passengers said 45 minutes into the voyage it had to turn back, when one of its engines failed.

Repairs were conducted and the ferry eventually made it to Lucky Bay, albeit three hours late.

The hiccup caused further delays for other passengers throughout the day.

3 hours late? there goes any time savings. just another reason (and a cheaper reason) to drive around instead.

God there so much going on the Yorke Peninsula, really is a happening region these days. This development sounds pretty good, the main drag is going to look so much different.

Plans for a new look Wallaroo were revealed yesterday (Monday) at the launch of an urban design framework to be exhibited in Wallaroo until July 12.

Major changes for Owen Terrace, the town’s main street, are part of the Masterplan — including moving the bowling and croquet clubs — but its landmark Moreton Bay Figs are not going anywhere.

The plan would see a Mall area created on the current club sites, with restaurant or café facilities, and a palette of unified materials and colours to be used for the entire street.

Car parks under the fig trees will disappear and the bitumen replaced with permeable, bound gravel around their trunks and wider, paved footways. As well, the road will be narrowed to slow traffic and kerb heights reduced along the existing shopfronts.

According to the plan, a sporting precinct off Cornish Terrace could be developed with the bowls, croquet and golf clubs sharing a new clubhouse built behind the existing oval and netball courts.

Wallaroo waterfront will be beautified “promenade style” to link Copper Cove Marina and Office Beach. A bitumen shared use (bikes/walkers) pathway will run the length of the coastline punctuated with shade sails and viewing platforms with seating and bollards featuring local information.

An upgrade of the sailing club, perhaps integrating a kiosk, is also considered in the plan.

Changes to roads leading into Wallaroo would include a roundabout at the junction of Athena Drive, Charles Terrace, East Terrace, Victoria Street and the Kadina Road.

Wildman Street could be extended to join Jetty Road and new signage and tree plantings would be used to guide traffic through the town.

A range of traveller facilities are suggested in the plan including information boards within town and public toilets and a BBQ area on the waterfront and solar powered lighting.

District Council of Copper Coast’s CEO, Peter Dinning, says the design fits well with a plan for a walking trail that should attract government funding under an open spaces program.

“We want to take a trail past the lighthouse, the Cutter Canberra (due to be on-site soon) and past some ruins, to link with the foreshore. The Tamarisk trees will go and we will look at grassing some of that area and revegetating around the old drain.”

A design has been commissioned and work on the trail is likely to start this year.

“We have $100,000 in the budget to start work on Wallaroo. Having some money available and a project ready to go will give us the impetus to push for more government funding.

“We have already put in a major funding application to the Federal Government to upgrade Chatfield Terrace to better service the port and ferry.”

Wallaroo’s Draft Urban Design Masterplan can be viewed at Newbery Chemist in Owen Terrace or viewed on Council’s website. For those wishing to comment, response sheets are available from local businesses and council offices.

Also on the Yorke Peninsula, plans have been reveled for a large mixed use retail development on the outskits of Kadina. The parcel of land includes 1,100 metres of Kadina-Wallaroo Road frontage to a depth of around 650 metres — an area of 67 hectares, or three times the size of the existing area of the Kadina Town Centre zone.

If approved, it could feature a supermarket, specialty goods store (Big W or similar), hardware store, bulky good outlets, retail showrooms (furniture and whitegoods), office and service functions.

Add this to the port hughes golf course and there on a winner!

But if this all goes a head driving from Port hughes to kadina to wallaroo is gonna be like driving through on big town!!

Don't like the sounds of moving the bowling greens. They are the Jack Chittleborough bowling greens - my grandfather. So there is some personal sentiment there. Apart from that, they could demolish Wallaroo and start again for all I care...

That's a hell of a development for a town the size of Port Hughes. Done properly, it ought to be quite a desirable destination for travellers. I would hope there are some clever water storage measures beyond just sinking the odd bore here and there - starting from scratch, they have the chance to construct all manner of storage tanks and watering systems, using the wetlands as some kind of natural filtration system.

Work on access roads to The Dunes development at Port Hughes has begun, and developers have announced the public sale of land and apartments is to start in December.
Three hundred residential allotments, ranging in size from 300 to 800 square metres and starting at $150,000 will go on sale at a VIP launch in Adelaide on Wednesday, November 28th, prior to an open day and public sale at the site on Sunday, December 2.

I sincerely hope that people show interest in this development, and snap up the land quickly. The more interest shown in substantial developments like this, the more future developments are likely to be created.

YORKE Peninsula has its first million-dollar apartment.

The $1.695 million penthouse with 270-degree views of Spencer Gulf was part of a $30 million sales rush for the Dunes Port Hughes development on Wednesday night.

Project manager Phill Hudson said the company was delighted 100 allotments and apartments had been sold in only two hours.

"South Australians showed their support for property on Yorke Peninsula," he said.

"I think Yorke Peninsula has been a bit of a secret.

"People are just working out what is out there. The interest has been so strong.

"We were expecting it but we weren't prepared for that level of interest. It was double our expectations."

Moonta real estate agent Chris Wardle was more optimistic in his expectations of the sales interest.

"We were quietly hoping for that sort of response but it was good to get it," he said.

"We sold about 30 apartments and about 70 allotments.

"They are the only apartments ever sold on Yorke Peninsula, so to sell it on the first night was fantastic and to get a penthouse was just so amazing."

The median house price at Port Hughes was $200,000 in September – up from $105,250 in 2002 – and new holiday homes already are exceeding the area's median house price.

The remainder of the allotments, based around a Greg Norman-designed golf course, will be made available to the public from Sunday.

Copper Coast Council Mayor Paul Thomas said the finished development would substantially change the population and character of the region.

"It is really divorced from the built-up environment we already have and they are creating a completely new town," he said.

"It is obviously going to have greater demands on infrastructure . . . but the opportunities there are just colossal.

"It will give a boom for the next decade in the building industry and the service industry (to support) those people living there.

"I think it could easily double our rate revenue."
