What a LOAD of RUBBISH that Adelaide has zero population growth, no new buildings and no major infrastructure spending.



I am a Melbourne boy, I spent six years at university in Brisbane, then moved back to Melbourne to establish my career as clearly Melbourne presented more professional employment opportunities. I ended up working in Melbourne for six years, before moving to Adelaide, "for lifestyle reasons."



Adelaide in February 2010, has Australia's lowest unemployment rate at 4.4 per cent. No other state can match that. South Australia has defied the global financial crisis and achieved the highest economic growth of any state over the past twelve months. It has a budget in surplus and a AAA rating.




Today ( Thursday 18th of February) Premier Mike Rann announced the revised plan for Adelaide for the next 30 years. The plan is designed to fit a further 560,000 people into the city. That should bring Adelaide's population to just under 2 million. Thus reaching the Governments population target 10 years earlier than first planned. (see today's Adelaide advertiser for more facts.)



Presently, Adelaide population growth is increasing rapidly. Infact, its population levels are now at record levels not achieved since the 1960s boom. (even beating levels achieved in the prosperous 1970s.)



In my 2 years here in Adelaide, i have seen heeps of infrastructure under construction of comitted and in the planning stages. South Australia's new prosperity has ensured a bevvy of impressive projects going on.



e.g. A whole brand new Freeway from Nuriootpa to Port Adelaide. (about 50kms of it.) basically now complete. The new Northern Connector freeway to connect the new Northern Freeway to the city now has entered final planning stages. These two new freeways have entirely changed the way the northern metro area will function transport wise. Now this week, the southern expressway is to be duplicated, as comitted by the government. Thats 3 new freeways in 5 years!!!


Delfin has commenced Blakes Crossing in the north, and announced a major new city on former salt lakes of 50,000. Lang Walker has just got planning approval to begin the Buckland Park new town for another 50,000 people. ...and these are just in the northern suburbs alone.
Today it was announced to place a further 27,000 people in high density developments within the cbd, and a further 10,000 in the new Bowden inner city urban renewal project, within ten years!


Adelaide is expanding the tram network. It's first class and very stylish. First rate urban design.
We've got uilti billion dollar investment in new railroad infrastructure, and brand new electric trams and trains ordered.



We've just received our second batch of trams from Madrid Spain the other month.



Our central business district has many new glass ten story buildings right across the city. They are all classy and represent the best in environmental design. Our height limit makes our city feel dense and urban. they're evenly spead out over 20 streets, not just a couple. it makes Adelaide feel like a proper city.



Our city streetscapes in Adelaide are not tacky. (and believe me Brisbane constantly builds tacky highrises and shopping centres...and they are still building cheap, nasty multi-colored eyesores....just look along its river front, and city entry points, admiralty towers, etc, hideous.)


Adelaide's cbd is completely handsome and cosmopolitan by contrast. Its well balanced and is a very good looking blend of historic stone, modern glass, parklands, footpath dining and euro trams. and of course the "old money culture" in Adelaide means people dress elegantly, like they do in Melbourne.

Adelaide's historic inner suburbs are attractive and every bit as lively as Melbourne's aswell. Adelaide has its versions of St Kilda in Glenelg, Fitzroy in Goodwood, Toorak in Hyde Park, South Yarra in North Adelaide, ..etc. Its a mini Melbourne. ...i'm right at home.

We're getting new stadiums, new casino, new riverfront/convention/entertainment precints, new hospitals, new film studios, expanding airport (voted Australia's best and also newest) a whole new North Terrace, Obahn extension into the city....and the list just goes on and on.

We even have a new multi million dollar zoo makeover nicluding new China panda enclosure.


The whole city is in the middle of a 21st century make over, and in the process leap frogging many other Australian cities. Adelaide it not talking about this change, its doing it!!!!


Adelaide is full of civilised, culture centred festivals year round. The food and wine culture is among Australia's best. I've also been to more theatre in my 2 years here than ever in my life living elsewhere.

Adelaide is fresh with new migrants from overseas and interstate. (yes interstate!! ...all my friends here are a mixture from Brisbane, Sydney and Perth ...same old story, moved here for professional reasons (skill shortages) was pleasantly surprised at how nice it is here ..then moved here permanently...and all in the past three years or so.)

Adelaide currently has 1.2 million people. In 30 years it will have 1.8 million.


Sorry, Adelaide is not going backwards!!!! ...and the Gold Coast will certainly not surpass it in population. How can it with the current statistics.

Adelaide is now "back in business", like it was in its old boom years. ..and the billions from the mining boom that are leading this makeover, will continue to ensure this economic and population growth well into the forseeable future.

Adelaide has also zoomed in to the Economists World's Top 10 Most livable Cities list. ...something good is clearly happening here.

Please, please get your facts right before you comment on South Australian matters.

George and I were standing next to an American man, and we got to chatting. He told us that he knows the CEO (his words) of something or other at Disneyland (or was it Disney World?). He went on to say that D-World/Land wants to open a park near Adelaide, and that they have been working on it for twelve years. Remember you heard it here first, folks.

Though I should probably tell you that my source also claimed to have been a cast member of the New York production of Cats..

The fringe opening parade is an event in which participants are very likely to be intoxicated.

I have been told than I told some UK visitors that there are trees which secreet a sticky sap which captures possums, which then the trees digest for their nutritional benefit. And that is why the trees in the parklands are so robust despite it not raining in Adelaide for the last 17 years.
