Adelaide to Host 5th APEC Transportation Ministers Meeting

#1 Post by Edgar » Mon Mar 26, 2007 11:21 am

I was travelling through North Terrace this morning and noticed this APEC banners hanging off every poles and I was wondering and largely surprised over how Adelaide would be chosen to host such a huge organisational conference.

So I did a little 'googling' job and found out this. Adelaide is actually chosen to host the 5th APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) Transportation Ministerial Meeting from 28 to 31 of March 2007, and is the first to be held in Australia.

This is a part of the task for the upcoming annual APEC 2007 Leader's meeting which will be hosted by Australia in Sydney later this year (September 2007).

Media Release from the Hon Warren Truss MP - Minister for Transport and Regional Services

01 September 2005

ADELAIDE CHOSEN TO HOST 5TH APEC TRANSPORT MINISTERS FORUM

Australian Government Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Warren Truss today announced that Adelaide had been selected to host the 5th APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) Transportation Ministerial Meeting from 28 to 31 March 2007.

The meeting is one of a number of Ministerial and Senior Officials Meetings to be held as part of Australia's role in hosting APEC 2007, culminating in the Leader's meeting in Sydney in September 2007.

"This is the first time we have hosted an APEC Transportation Ministerial meeting in Australia," Mr Truss said.

The Minister was enthusiastic about the opportunity for APEC Transport Ministers to visit Australia and advance the important work that APEC is doing to progress free and open trade and investment in the transport sector.

"The meeting provides a prime opportunity for furthering relationships in the Asia-Pacific Region."

APEC member economies work together in a voluntary and consensus manner. The Transport Ministers work to achieve a seamless and safe transport system to facilitate free and secure trade.

Minister Truss said the key priority areas for APEC Transport Ministers were to encourage a more competitive transport industry; encourage safe and environmentally friendly transport systems; and to encourage human resource development and capacity building in both developing and developed economies.

"The meeting will provide an opportunity for transport industry involvement, to share information and ideas with APEC Transport Ministers and delegates on APEC matters generally and to promote Australia's future transport trade and investment."

The work of APEC has positive impacts on the Australian economy generally.

"The Ministerial meeting provides a wonderful opportunity for South Australia to promote itself to the potential 21 visiting Ministers and scores of delegates from the member economies. Such a meeting will have significant flow on benefits for the South Australian economy," Minister Truss said.

Further detail about the meeting will be announced closer to APEC 2007.

Here's another news release from APEC website:
Issued by the 5th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Transportation Ministers Meeting

Transportation Ministers Meeting - Adelaide, March 28-30
Generic Media Advisory Now Available

January 11, 2007, Singapore

The Media Advisory for the 5th APEC Transportation Ministers Meeting (TMM) that will be held in Adelaide, Australia, on March 28-30, has been released by the APEC 2007 Taskforce.

The TMM is an important forum for shaping regional policies and projects to promote a safer, more secure, internationally competitive and environmentally sustainable transport system in the Asia-Pacific. The meeting will provide Ministers with the opportunity to set transportation policy direction for the APEC region.

Efficient transport systems are critical to maximising economic productivity and facilitating trade between member economies. Around 30 per cent of all commercial services in the region are related to transport with the sector accounting for up to five per cent of the region's GDP.

Continual progress has been made towards the progressive liberalisation of aviation and maritime transport services since the first meeting of APEC Transportation Ministers in Washington, in 1995. This has included continual work in reducing practical barriers to free trade and finding ways for transport systems to operate more efficiently across the supply chain.

An Industry Showcase will also be held in conjunction with the Ministerial Meeting exclusively for APEC attendees and their guests. It will focus on innovation in transport safety and security in Australia. The interactive program of the showcase will provide Ministers with a hands-on opportunity to examine the latest technology in transport safety, security and facilitation.

TMM is the first of two meetings taking place in Adelaide, in the state of South Australia, as part of the APEC year hosted by Australia in 2007.

Media accreditation for TMM is now open and closes on Tuesday, March 6, 2007.

Hmmm does anyone else find that having this meeting in Adelaide is slightly Ironic?

There are quite a few APEC Meetings spread across the country and 2007. Details here: http://www.apec2007.org/apec.aspx?inc=ms/ms

The Senior Officials Meeting II will also be held in Adelaide and will be substantially larger then the Transport Ministers Meeting. SOM II will run from 16th April to 24th April.

So that explains the cops with bikes, horses and dogs around there today. Large amounts of the Convention Centre were fenced off.

The whole thing was shut down, and entire floors of the Hyatt too.

All over for now, until next month.

And that explains why the terrorist training excersise was held out front of the Convention Centre. I thought it was just a random location chosen.
