Ideas on how to get bhp trucks to olympic dam

In yesterdays paper (8/4/07) there was an article on the difficulties on how to transport the 100 new tip trucks to olympic dam there are as wide as a country highway and travel at 10 k/ph im assuming there manufactured over seas so there shouldnt be much problem getting them from Outer Harbour to Port Wakefield but then how to pass Port Wakefield? post your own ideas here.

Build a rail siding from Pimba to the mine (which would also be used to take the minerals out). Then, have the dump trucks dismantled sections and trasport them in sections to the site. Easy done and the siding can be used for many years afterwards as well.

Umm, so they can accessed with ease, or at all... that's like asking "Why do we need roads at all?". The mining boom won't reach it's potential if we don't invest in the infrastructure to make it happen.

Supposedly they could run an operation to shut down some highways and roads over a short period to allow these trucks to move up to the mines. Moving them by rail would be more of a logistical nightmare, as the loads would be too wide.

I believe he meant why do these trucks need to be moved via road. In other words, off road? A bit of bush bashing.


Im sure theyll find a solution. This isnt the first time they are using these trucks.

What I found more interesting then these trucks, is that the article also mentioned the next state budget will have funding devoted to infrastructure for the mining boom.

Big fuck off four wheel drives can plough through just about anything.

These are at least 10x the size. They'd hoon through scrub no problems whatsoever.

This is a completely ridiculous idea. This mode of transport would be slow, dangerous and destructive to the environment.

Not only that but the tires on these trucks cost something like $15000 a pop and not only that but imagine the fuel bill at the end of the trip, especially if they have to be driven far away from the main highway. Lets not even begin to speculate the cost of repairs if something breaks down along the way.

AFAIK, in a lot of places where these large trucks are used, they transport them to the mines in pieces and then assemble them at an assembly plant (which is also used to maintain the machines) near the mining site.
