What a pity they have gone to so much effort for the art deco facade on KWS...which does look great BTW, but they weren't able to a least save at least a portion of the pub in James Place.

It's an old water well, you'd be surprised how many of the older buildings in the CBD have them buried/capped off somewhere within their structure. I work at the Museum and unbeknownst to even most of the staff there, there is an old brick well located under a plug in the men's bathroom.

Were they found underneath the old James Place Hotel?

No, what used to be the chain-link car park for Southern Cross Arcade

I presume the wells may be from the 1879 rebuild, but could be from the original building of the 1840s. Below is a picture taken in the 1910s of the rebuild. Thought some of you may be interested...

I don't think the well is related to the original hotel given their separation.
Communal well for the block?

Also, that hole with the well used to be an original pavement level. Or maybe the basement floor of a building in that location that was just filled over when a carpark was put in the spot.

Looks like another cantilevered crane base on this site. And an additional base looks to be forming centre ground.

Nope, no more crane parts, just a s**t tonne of steel reinforcing for concrete pours
