Interesting when people complain about political point scoring, then conflate "ambulance ramping" with a proposal for an arena-which some of the same people have been screaming for for years.
The Adelaide entertainment Center, is falling well behind its interstate counterparts, is poorly located in respect to other CBD attractions, and will be in need of a major revamp/capacity upgrade to continue to attract top acts. The Ent Cent location is better suited to a high density residential/employment precinct-if it is of high standard..not just a continuation of the current crap at Bowden.
The Riverfront precinct will never live up to its potential if at one end it is a railway yard, empty park lands, or the back of a hospital...it needs something with weekend and night time activity at its western end.
Could this proposal have replaced the mess at Memorial Drive?-Probably...but Memorial Drive would not create the critical mass required to make the Riverbank fully functional. Would the rail yards site be better for a square field stadium,?-Not really sure there is enough space as even a mid sized soccer /ruby stadium requires more room surrounding it than this site provides.-Not to say a rectangular stadium should be discarded somewhere in parklands just because this proposal is getting all the press.
As for ambulance ramping, it is a problem in most states, Labor and Liberal alike...even in a state awash with money with a Labor government as it is currently a major issue in WA as well.
This venue won't fix anything re the riverbank.

Whats the overall aim, whats the objective and final outcome they're trying to reach or accomplish?
Because its a mess.

The northern side should be the stadium/sports precinct.
The convention centre should have been moved to the western side behind the hospital, plenty of room for an even bigger venue.
That would leave the central bit between the festival centre and Morphett st bridge.
Casino and entertainment complex, which would fit in well with the sports precinct on game and event days, if there were eateries and bars and so on lining the southern side of the riverbank.
Thats just my 2 cents..
So much more could have been done, the outcome could have been so so so much more satisfying for everyone. But it is what it is, we're stuck with what they've done for a good few decades.

Adelaide hasn't made that jump that Perth obviously has.

Perth entertainment and sport locations are a mess. Football stadium.. too far from the CBD hub. Concert hall at one end , convention centre stuck somewhere else sandwiched on a freeway off ramp. Adelaide is so fortunate to have this cluster of venues in a centralised spot ( to each other) I just don't know why this proposal is copping so much hate, much of it would seem political.

I actually don't mind this proposal in itself. I really don't like the $700m price tag. I'd still think it was expensive at half that.

I think it costs what it costs. It's a classic case where the burden on tax payers for it is understandable because otherwise it's a trip interstate to see any half decent shows. Add to that the age of the old AEC, it's over 30 now. There's an opportunity to recoup some costs from selling the old centre and further potential to develop a TOD around Bowden - therefore long term benefits flow from that as well. Also if Adelaide wants to have an iconic waterfront, this is a good opportunity for it (the RAH is hideous).

The issue here is just shows up how vain and listless the government is in that they try selling the expensive redevelopment of memorial drive as a multi purpose facility for concerts to hide the fact that it's just a hideously expensive roof for a 1 week tennis tournament. What was the last show there anyway? Pearl Jam in the 90s?!

Agreed. This looks like it'll be a fantastic venue, and a massive upgrade on what the Entertainment Centre can currently offer.

There may need to be something to replace the Entertainment Centre Theatre for smaller shows, but I would think most of those type of shows could be integrated into the existing Convention Centre spaces.

Some of the comments bagging the proposal are borderline Adelaide Now comments.

It would appear that there has been some concerts in semi-recent history, 5 concerts since 2008, with the most recent being Jet & Powderfinger in Oct 2010.

It would be interesting if any kind of decent acoustics could be achieved with the new roof however.

It's called Thebarton Theatre, and it was doing just fine managing those mid-tier shows until the state government at the time built a new venue that wasn't actually required and simply split what tours did come here between Thebby and AEC Theatre, rather than attract more. What really bugs me about this discussion is that this proposal has been put together by the state government, the business heads of Adelaide Venue Management and an architect firm; the likelihood that they actually consulted with industry experts re: what would be required for a world class sporting facility or better yet a world class music/entertainment facility is probably nil. The same can be said of the last upgrade they underwent at the Entertainment Centre, it was literally lipstick on a pig, the venue still sucked from a back of house, tech, concert experience perspective which is why it had no sway in bringing artists to town, or punters to concerts (obviously other factors involved in this, but speaking purely about AEC here). If we want to consider the 'success' of AVM and their understanding of what is required for these things, lets look at Hindmarsh Stadium... They took over the management of the venue, spent what infrastructure spending they were provided on unnecessary, and subsequently mediocre amenities; leased off the naming rights to Coopers and with the proceeds going towards replacing the blue chairs across the stadium with red chairs? They also increased how many concerts/events were staged there without any consideration of how close these were to match day and what impact they would have on the playing surface.

Thebby will always have its place for smaller acts or for larger acts that don't see enough reward after paying the higher venue costs for AEC. I don't think anyone here is suggesting that a single venue should replace it and the AEC in one, correct me if i'm wrong?

Memorial Dr will make a great competitor to thebby. You can just imagine the state government mad scrambling to pay for an act to come down and help clean the egg off their face.

It seems this proposal is what I suggested in another thread late last year. Except I also suggested where a rectangular stadium may go as well.

If the West End Brewery and Entertainment Centre sites both get sold off for other developments this will severely limit any options.

If our largest and what would be our 3rd largest stadiums both have good heavy and light rail connection, then it would make sense for our 2nd largest to have the same.

I believe the idea of putting a new rectangular stadium over the rail yard next to the new arena has been around for longer than that. IIRC the idea was mooted near the end of Labor’s last term but the numbers didn’t stack up; go figure.

Go speak to the crews who service the country towns. Who can't take a break because there's no other ambulances available and have to keep working so that there's at least ONE ambulance available.
Why? because dozens of ambulances are always ramped at our major hospitals, waiting with patients inside them.
There just aren't enough ambulances to get around anyway.
Even those first response SUV's they have end up ramped at our hospitals.

Nurses have to fork out another $700-800 a year in parking at the QEH.
Public hospital, and we have to pay, the 2 hour free parking is gone for the public.

We've again got the highest jobless rate in the country.
We're paying higher water bills then the east coast.

And the list of shit goes on.

But we have $700 million to throw at a stadium that nobody has asked for. The basketball and netball haven't asked for a new venue.
The Convention Centre hasn't asked for an expansion.

If our state is that flush with cash, why doesn't this government allow free parking at our major hospitals? Instead they've increased the cost to park at our hospitals.
Why don't they properly fund and resource our emergency services, particularly the ambulance service? In fact, why don't they allow for free ambulance services?

We could have a better funded and resourced ambulance service, we could have a better funded health care system, we could have better funded emergency services in general, and we could have a new multi-purpose stadium in the city.
But this government instead of opting for the proper full redevelopment of Memorial Drive estimated to cost $250 million, have instead opted to waste tens of millions on half arsed upgrades there, while spending $700 million on a new stadium across the river.

Clay asked why people are opposed to this stadium? There's your answer.
We have a health care system in crisis, we have under funded emergency services with crews stretched to breaking point, people literally dying because there's not enough ambulances to get around, bridges in desperate need of repair or replacement, road maintenance backlogs longer then you can imagine (just look at the state our roads are in..you don't need to see any official paperwork you just need to spend a day driving in Adelaide), and the list goes on...but some think it's a great idea to waste $700 million on a stadium.

At least fund other things that actually need the money desperately.
