Lit up it would make a top impression of that corner. 'Northern lights' ideas come to mind!

The wool clothing shop on the ground floor has finally closed.

Furthermore I found this DA on the ACC website:
Type Application Assessed on Merit
Application Number DA/461/2007/2
Lodgement Date 26/09/2008
Latest Decision Development Approval Granted (09/10/2008)
Location 41-55 King William Street, ADELAIDE SA 5000
Description Alterations to existing building and change the use to hotel accommodation with ground floor retail and basement food court - STAGE 2 - SEISMIC UPGRADE
This probabaly explains why this project appears a little quiet.

[COM] Colonial Mutual Life Building - crn of Hindley/King William

#50 Post by olliepee » Thu Sep 24, 2009 9:03 pm

Hey there -

I walk past the awesome (but horribly dirty looking) Colonial Mutual Life Building every day on the way to work. It's such an incredible building and I've thought a complete waste of space - It looks empty and all the shops down below are abandoned. I just did a quick search and Hey Presto, I found this:

"Between 2008-09 this building will be converted into a hotel comprising 182 suites. As part of the redevelopment, the basement will be converted into an 11 tenancy foodcourt. The building's redevelopment will also involve converting the uppermost floor and plant room into a penthouse."
http://www.emporis.com/application/?nav ... &id=108721

Does anyone know the redevelopment status of this?? Working on Hindley Street I've got to say that a *nice* foodcourt - please please please no more shopping mall style foodcourts! - would go down really well.

Ollie

Any updates on this project?? Hope they don't turn it into another McDonads/KFC/Subway food court.

I doubt it's going to be one of those as both McDonalds & Subway already have Hindley St. stores, and KFC are building a new one in the UniHouse building.
However, I'm pretty sure this one's been filed under the "Global Financial Crisis" banner for the time being. Shame really, because what could be a focal point of the city's just being left vacant.

HURRY UP!

I'm ranting, but the state of this building and the length of its vacancy is just offensive. JPE costs the project at $21 million and lists it as due for completion this month. But I'm sure I haven't seen anyone on site in more than a year, and I'm wondering whether there's actually ANY prospect of the present proposal being undertaken soon? Because the developers behind the project really ought to move it or loose it.

The heritage listed Colonial Mutual Building, Adelaide's tallest building between 1934 & 1969, was quite an impressive building in its heyday and it's sad to see how delapidated it has become especially at street level . It occupies a prime location in KWS but its current state not only detracts from the streetscape, it gives a really bad impression of our lovely city to visitors and residents alike.

This building deserves better!

its a disgrace that this iconic building is still vacant, same goes for 1 King William Street.

Both of them look terrible at street level.

According to the JPE website. Fitout will occur in 2011. We can only hope!

2011...not in time for next years festival season, but hopefully in time for 2012's. They really need to make the ground level a priority though, i think we can all agree those boarded up windows are not a good look for the city.

Hey isn't there a Rydges on the corner of south and west terraces? Is that staying or going after the fit out is compete? Will they just relocate to the new site?

There can be more than 1 of a hotel chain in a city. For example we have 2 Stamfords and 2 Grand Chancellors, not to mention 7 Oaks.

From my understanding, Rydges will remain at South Terrace and open up the 'Rydges CML' here.
