One item that isn't clear from the renders so far is how the south bound traffic flow conflicts will be handled - more specifically not having traffic entering the southbound motorway tunnel from Anzac Highway clashing with traffic exiting the motorway south bound on to the South Road surface road.

Not embedding the image since it's large, but this map seems to show that traffic will never come in contact: https://dit.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/ima ... DESIGN.JPG

Good information on this part of the page overall: https://dit.sa.gov.au/nsc/torrens_to_da ... ern_tunnel

I understand where you're coming from.

But what is the 'forward planning' for? Why are we actively providing an easy solution to a problem that is avoidable and does not need to exist?
Do you have an alternate solution for getting traffic off the freeway and into the city that doesn't involve a ramp like this and won't risk backing up traffic?
Invest in public transport.
How does public transport stop traffic backing up into the tunnel when it leaves it and immediately hits traffic lights?

Again, I'm fully on board with the idea we should be spending a magnitude more on public transport infrastructure, but the completion of the North-South Motorway is going to happen no matter what. Making part of it unsafe helps no-one.

Because it gets people out of their cars and therefore not needing to drive at all.

Accepting this poor design is just going along with the status quo.

The thing you need to realize is that we need both.

We as an environmental, social and economic society don't 'need' people to drive, but there are those with mobility issues who do. This kind of car use should be actively catered for.

It'll be interesting to see how they manage to put the new support pylons in place for the western end of the tram bridge without tearing it down, because it looks like about 4 of them - plus the western stairs - are hovering over the trench.

Out of curiosity have you ever caught a taxi or uber or had food delivered?

Of course in my lifetime, but only when there has been no alternative.

Even in the most idealistic public transport scenarios how do you see the traffic load coming off the motorway and entering the city being reduced to the level of a light suburban road?

Because that seems like the type of bar that would need to be met to avoid backups.

does anyone know what the issue is on the western side of south road surface/motorway between flinders drive and sturt road? the far right lane on the surface road (right turning lane onto sturt road) has been closed off for months now and intermittently the trench directly below has the far left lane against the concrete wall occasionally closed where work is being undertaken. whatever the issue is seems to be taking months to fix.

Tunnels to be built for the North-South Corridor project will claim a community centre, bowling club and part of a sports oval, official letters have confirmed.

Transport and Infrastructure Department chief executive Tony Braxton-Smith has met with West Torrens Council chief executive Terry Buss to discuss the construction of two three-lane tunnels under South Rd from near the Brickworks Market to Richmond.

The tunnels are part of a $9.9bn project to complete the North-South Corridor, with another two tunnels to be built under South Rd from Glandore to Clovelly Park.

Mr Braxton-Smith has told Mr Buss that more land than initially estimated was needed for the project within the West Torrens Council area.

In a letter to Mr Buss on October 20, Mr Braxton-Smith said the “immediate priorities” for further work included:

TORRENSVILLE Bowling Club relocation.

THEBARTON Community Centre “relocation options in the vicinity of Richmond Oval”.

KINGS Reserve masterplan and Thebarton Oval “realignment proposal”.

THEBARTON Bioscience precinct and open spaces.

Mr Braxton Smith said the project’s team would soon start holding workshops with council staff to plan the compulsory acquisition of land and construction schedules.

“The (department) project team will make contact separately on matters pertaining to the acquisition process for the City of West Torrens properties as being required for the T2D Project,” said the letter.

This followed another departmental letter sent to the council on October 19 that said “more space is required than the existing road corridors permit, and some council land will be permanently required for construction”.

“This is early notification that some land owned by the City of West Torrens will be required by the project,” it said. “The T2D Project will require the land by late 2024. We need to meet with you to discuss what this means for your property and to explain the next steps.”

The Thebarton Community Centre and Torrensville Bowling Club are located beside South Rd, opposite the West Thebarton Hotel.

Both were built by the West Torrens Council in the past decade using proceeds from the sale of land occupied by the Brickworks Market.

The letters are the first official confirmation to emerge publicly that the facilities will be demolished for the tunnel project.

They have been attached to the agenda for the council’s monthly meeting on Tuesday night and were circulated on Friday by a residents’ group monitoring the compulsory acquisition of homes and small businesses.
