I really hope they don't go with rail under road, when there is a whole chunk of land to the north side they can use for road over rail.
Ummmm... if the railway goes under the road, isn't that the same as the road going over the railway, just depending on the perspective of whether the observer is in a car/truck or train?

Nope, for rail under road, the road is at-grade and the rail is in a trench. For road over rail, the rail is at grade and the road is on a bridge

This will be road over rail. Footings for masts for the Gawler Line Electrification Project have already been cast on the outer sides of both platforms of Ovingham Railway Station.

So, sadly, this project will benefit cars and road vehicles only, and a station expansion or upgrade looks highly unlikely.

Given the absence of the rail components of GlobeLink and Northern Connector, lowering the ARTC main line would have been quite a costly exercise I imagine, even if the new trench could be dug west of the current alignment before closing the line.

Not sure whether the fact that they have cast mast footings is any indication of the final outcome. The electrification is a separate project and will likely be completed before work on the intersection upgrade actually commences. Whatever the option chosen, at this site it is likely that the electrified infrastructure will be replaced or at least reconfigured when the intersection is upgraded.

Work has started. I guess its utilities relocations or some other preparatory works.

I had a look in the vicinity today. An electrification mast footing has been cast right next to the boom gate on the south side of the crossing. In the triangle of land immediately to SE of the level crossing, there has been a lot of cable duct installation going on with three metal cable troughs running south against the boundary of the rail corridor. There have been significant cabling works happening along the Gawler line in connection with the electrification. At the north end of Ovingham Stn some form of underground service with large access pits under the three tracks. I could tell if it was railway cabling or some other utility. The was a sign near the station advising o utility works occurring.

Overall, it looks pretty good, and solves most of the tricky parts. Two three stick out though:
  • Why not join up Drayton St and Exeter Tce under the bridge?
  • New station platforms, but only those shitty bus stop shelters?
  • Bravo on the (seperated?) bike lane over the bridge, but the lane completely disappears (not just ends - the kerb is shown coming in) just after Chief St.

The design is only indicative, they'll almost certainly install new shelters it's just easier to display the current ones until they know what they'll be doing. Remember, the concept animations for Bowden, Oaklands and now the Flinders Link looked very different compared to the final product.

I really hope they make use of that wasted land on the corner of Exeter Terrace and Torrens Road.
Could they have extended the bridge a bit further and grade separated the Churchill Road and Torrens Road intersection as well?

Today's announcement was about the overall design option for the project, which is road over rail. There is still a great amount of detailed design work that needs to be done before construction starts in early 2021.

This also happened at Oaklands Crossing, where the government was desperate for a fly-though video and renders. As the design for the station was not finalised, they put in place a random structure in the renders that bears no resemblance to what we have today.

Hopefully this applies here as well and we will also see an upgraded train station.
On Monday 15 June 2020, The South Australian Government has announced its preferred design for the Ovingham Level Crossing Removal Project, elevating Torrens Road over the Gawler railway line.

The Australian and South Australian Governments have allocated $231 million towards the removal of the level crossing at Torrens Road, Ovingham.

A planning study to investigate a range of options to remove Ovingham Level Crossing is complete and a preferred solution determined.

After considering all options and the characteristics of the local area, the government’s preferred option is to grade-separate and elevate Torrens Road over the Gawler passenger and freight railway lines.

The preferred design also involves the elevation of the western end of Churchill Road, which intersects with Torrens Road approximately 100 metres from the Ovingham Level Crossing heading towards the city, so that it meets the elevated height of Torrens Road.

Cheers for the updates on this all - but is there any actual evidence that Ovingham station itself will be touched, except for the access ramps which will probably need to be reconfigured?
All the State Government's language on this speaks of the benefits to road users only.
There are far worse stations on the line than Ovingham but a renewal of platform surface and shelter and IT upgrades would surely be a basic follow on from the project?
I used to use Ovingham occasionally to visit / leave the Aquatic Centre - it's barely a 10 minute walk, but you woudn't know it from the station. I'm sure just better signage at the entrances to all of our Adelaide Metro stations would help a lot of them gain a few more passengers.
