What is a P-turn? New manoeuvre coming to Hoddle and Johnston streets

If you dread making a hook turn, you might want to avoid the P-turn.
Melbourne drivers will have to add an extra turning manoeuvre to their repertoire when the P-turn comes into play on Hoddle and Johnston streets from Monday.
Motorists wanting to turn right from Hoddle Street or Johnston Street will need to drive through the intersection, make a U-turn ahead, then drive back to the intersection before turning left onto their desired road.
The moves stops direct right turns from Hoddle Street into Johnston Street in Abbotsford, and from Swan Street into Punt Road at Richmond - part of an ambitious plan to ease traffic at the notorious bottleneck.
It's part of the state government's $60 million Streamlining Hoddle Street project. Extra lanes have been purpose-built for the new turns in order to keep traffic on the congested thoroughfare flowing.
If you want to turn right from Hoddle Street on to Johnston Street at any time:
Travel through the intersection, but keep right
Travel to the end of the turning lane and make a U-turn
Travel back to the intersection and turn left onto Johnston Street

Is it that far from what SA has for South Rd/Port Rd where you turn left off South Rd then U-turn on Port Rd to complete your right turn on to Port Rd.

Or North East Rd/Sudholz Rd where you turn left off NERD and head down a side street then turn right on to Sudholz.

EmilyChole is brave talking about a Victorian issue in a South Australian “pub”. Typical East Coasters thinking the world revolves around Melbourne.

I don't see this working out well at all. This is Hoddle Street we're talking about. The concept of a P turn works well in theory whereby the traffic congestion is limited to one direction of flow. But seeing as both directions get very heavily congested, it'll be extremely hard to be able to do a U-turn and then having to cross over 4 lanes of traffic to get in the left lane, which in itself is a dangerous and difficult manoeuver in heavy traffic. This will only cause more problems than it solves as right hand turning traffic will now instead bank up over the intersections, rather than before it.

Assuming there's traffic lights at the point where the u-turn is performed..

Have you seen how congested Hoddle Street gets in the peak hour? Particularly the section between Johnston and the Eastern southbound. An additional set of traffic lights is only just asking to be queued over. The backup goes as far as the Eastern Freeway itself.

It's destined to fail.
