Which was Adelaides most significant decade for Infrastructure development

#1 Post by xrplive » Fri Apr 24, 2020 10:27 am

Just move back to SA after living OS for several years and have been quiet impressed with all the current new developments taking place/ recently completed

Do you think the last 10 years have been our most significant for infrastructure development and from the 50s to now which were the major infrastructural developments, i can remember the following, pls feel free to add:

50s - Adelaide Airport
60s - Flinders Uni
70s - Festival Theatre & Rundle Mall, Football Park
80s - Casino, Convention. Center, Hyatt, State Bank building (now westpac house), OBahn & Bicentennial Conservatory
90s - Myer Center, AEC, Southern Express (one way)
00s - desalination plant, Heysen Tunnels, New Airport, Tram line extended to NthTce,
10s - Redevelopment of Adelaide Oval , Vic sq, Convention Centre, New RAH & Medical precinct, Northern Expressway

10s - Duplication of Southern Express Way, Mclaren Vale Overpass, Darlington, Tonsley, Electrification and extension of Noarlunga train to Seaford, Building boom over last 5 years. It's been pretty busy tbh this last decade.

In terms of difference in the CBD, a tie between the 70's and 80's.

In terms of impact to the suburbs, definitely the last 10.

Unless you're talking purely about height, the 2010s saw more 40m+ highrises completed than any other decade. Numbers are something like this (including buildings outside the CBD, but the majority of highrises are in the CBD):
2010s: 36, 35 if you don't count August Towers as complete
2000s: 18
1990s: 12 (and none from 1994 to 1998 - ouch)
1980s: 26
1970s: 22
1960s: 21
pre 1960s: 13

2020s: 14 so far under construction/completed.

Mostly outside of Adelaide, but SA infrastructure that would have impacted the city too...
1850s: Burra Monster Mine
1860s: Copper triangle and Wallaroo smelters
1910s: Trans-Australian railway
1920s: expansion of country railways, new Adelaide Railway Station
1940s: Whyalla steelworks and shipyard
1950s: Playford A power station and beginning to generate electricity without interstate coal
1960s: Blanchetown bridge
1970s: Kingston Bridge, Southeastern freeway, Swanport bridge
1980s Olympic Dam mine

Also Jamestown battery (and more wind farms) and O-Bahn tunnel.

In terms of skyline impact sure, but in terms of how people use the city things like Rundle Mall are much more impactful
