Adelaide - The Christmas City

#1 Post by Ben » Mon Nov 12, 2007 4:03 pm

I have noticed over the years the Adelaide City Council are spending more time and money on "Decorating" the city. I think this is a good thing as it promotes a festive feel to the city and could even become a tourist attraction in itself.

We already have:

- One of the biggest Christmas Parades in the World (Credit Union Christmas Pageant)
- Tallest Christmas tree in Australia (Victoria Square)
- World's Biggest Christmas Decoration (Santa on David Jones)
- Christmas Tree on all three sides of Adelaide's tallest building (Westpac House)
- Christmas Brewery Lights

And I have noticed on top of the banners on most street poles the ACC have gone for actual decorations on them, such as reindeers, baubles, stars ect

I just noticed this application from the ACC today too:
Type: Application Assessed on Merit
Application Number: DA/903/2007
Lodgement Date; 31/10/2007
Location; 163 Hindley Street and 164 Hindley Street, ADELAIDE SA 5000
Description: Install Christmas lights across street between two buildings

Anyone know if Westpac Tower will turn into a christmas tree like previous years?

You gotta be kidding.

You have yet to see a true Christmas City, adding the largest this and the tallest that doesn't prove anything. I still don't feel that is good enough.

Look at Sydney and Singapore, you would be crying to see the effort being done in Adelaide.

I've been to Sydney at Christmas and saw a few banners here and there. Nothing out of the ordinary that any other city in the world would have?

All I know is, on Christmas in Adelaide, you stay at home because the city is dead, and wait for Boxing Day before you start crawling out to the city again. And you call that tourist attraction?

Yeah, Christmas City!

Seriously, visit other cities in the world and then you'll know adding the tallest Christmas tree in Australia that nobody else in Australia knows or cares about, or putting up the largest Santa in David Jones, again, nobody else in Australia knows or cares about, and call it The Christmas City is a bit over crediting.

If you have a few of this and that made up in large scale and that is all, is still bland.

I'm not sure these icons are meant to be a tourist attractions.. they're just part of the spirit of christmas in adelaide.

By the way, have we mentioned the brewery christmas display and lobethal yet?

edit: brewery's been mentioned already.

I'm not sure what your getting at Edgar? How can you say the city is dead at Christmas time have you been in here? it is like Kaos.

And yes to me the decorations around the city add to the festive vibe and are attractions in there own right. I have seen tourist having photos in front of the big Santa in the mall... tourist aren;t going to have photos in front of a shop or pub on Christmas day? If that's what your getting at?

My point is that no other Australian city has as many festive decorations or in the scale that we have? If that is untrue I take back my statement but in my travels around this country we are miles ahead.

Yep, city retailers do most of their trade during the festive season, opening 24 hours a day at certain times. Even at 1-2am shopping in Rundle Mall or Marion, it's packed like it was a thursday night.

We do our bit to celebrate Christmas but here's a few pics of Christmas in Hong Kong when I went there in 2001.

Image
These buildings had animated designs not just static light displays!

Image
Image
If you look closely at the big tower next to the Bank of China building, you can make out the big "2002" written down it's length.

Image
The fireworks on the left building was animated too!

This is from a city which doesn't have a big Christian population. :D
