In that case, it would substantially improve tram and bus travel along Jetty Road. From a public transport and safety perspective, it would be a big improvement. Politically, and from the legitimate point of view of car drivers, it won't happen. But technically, it would be quite feasible, improving safety and travel time.

The examples you mention in Europe, also have the European benefit of all entry points on busses, where people can enter via all doors. It really speeds up the standing time at each stop meaning less delays for all modes. This should at lest be trialled on Obahn, and make exits at the interchanges via ticketed gates.

To run buses down the Port Road tram corridor, the centre island stops will need to be rebuilt.

I'm wondering if (more hoping) the government has been holding off on tram network expansion plans until the network is returned to public hands? Made it easier to get back, and they can announce big plans for the network owned by the people of SA heading into the next election.

From a political perspective, it would depend on the polls closer to the election.

The Government is likely to have lost quite a few votes in the seat of Adelaide because of the unnecessary takeover of the Parklands for the hospital. So, if that's significant, they might like to put up a tram extension like the City Loop to head that off.

However, if the polls show that the Government is well ahead, it may decide to hold off on trams to keep as a strategy for a later election.

There's certainly no sign of interest in trams otherwise. In fact, given the comments from the Treasurer a few months back, I'd say that hopes for further trams are quite misplaced.

I guess I'll just have to hope they were publicly shit talking any kind of future improvements purely to force Torrens Connect's cooperation, and have long secretly planned to slowly change their tune on the way to some campaign promises next year :D

I always thought that trams were more of a liability than a vote winner given the near hysteria the last small extensions generated.

Hopefully it’s been long enough that the commissioning issues that plagued the Botanic Gardens extension are out of public memory.

The current branches are incomplete stubs, the network needs to be filled in.
