If you could demolish any buildings in Adelaide...
what would they be?
I am in the city a fair bit for work, uni and social and think that the rundle st/rundle mall/pulteny intersection has got to be one of the most unfortunate intersections architecturally speaking (thanks to the Rundle Convergence this will change.) Unihouse is a shocking building, as is the building opposite that is lots of different businesses but mainly Telstra. And then we have the lovely Target and HJ's carparks. This area is in a definite need of a make over.
Ligertwood/Napier at Adelaide Uni are also up there. Not only because of what they replaced but seriously, Napier looks so shabby and disgusting.
The Adam Internet building (across from City Central) on King William Street is pretty shocking too.
Those are three areas off the top of my head.
Your turn... GO!

You're right about Toys R Us.
Although it would be awesome if it was turned into a warehouse style residential and then covered by other taller buildings.

I agree.Will wrote:The Ligertwood Building.
I have to admit, deep down, I have a degree of affection for Napier. i know the majestic Exhibition Building had to be razed for its construction and long may we rue that decision; I know that much of the interior is a horrid mish-mash of concrete stairwells, tiny little hallways and doors, and neglected courtyards, but from some angles it displays very strong elements of International-style architecture, of which I am quite fond. I can't quite put my finger on it - perhaps it's the uniqueness of the building in Adelaide, or just my unexplainable like of all things '60s, but I don't hate Napier (sometimes a wretched dislike, as bits fall off, leaves collect, and the wind howls through every nook and cranny, but not an all-encompassing hate).
Ligertwood, on the other hand, is utter dross; a hideous pastiche of the elegant buildings nearby, forever scarred with cancerous surfaces, juvenile detailing and horrendous cartoonish arches, protrusions and limpets. The godawful extensions thrust upon the previously-elegant Student's Union Building are candidates for removal, too. Look at this lovely old thing:

Im surprised no ones mentioned the not so beautiful brown ACC office block on Pirie St
GHD building, if your all talking about that old 50s brick building on corner of Grenfell/Gawler Place, I love it. Its cool and very New York City style.
That atrocious car park monster which had Truscotts on the ground floor on Franklin street needs to be bulldozed immediately. I reckon its Adelaides no 1 eyesore.
And what about the grey, concrete 3-4 level Singapore airlines building on K W st, in between southern cross arcade, and Darrel Lee chocolates. I dont like that one at all.

Oh yes, that nasty little grey thing. While we're at it, we could probably push over the entire Southern Cross Arcade, to be perfectly honest. I couldn't think of a nicer place for a 40-storey retail/office complex, fronting both the CBD's spine and its retail heart. Haigh's has nicer chocolate, anywayjk1237 wrote:Im surprised no ones mentioned the not so beautiful brown ACC office block on Pirie St

"Station building", Womma Railway Station.
I would have nominated the former Oaklands Park Railway Station but my wish came true.
Oh, does it have to be a CBD building?

The Gold Coast - Australia's centre for insipid, tacky & boring.
Re: If you could demolish any buildings in Adelaide...
I would derive great satisfaction from razing the ASER buildings, but I concede that's slightly extremist.
Otherwise, the Adamnet building. Oh, and although not particularly offensive, that tiny SA Tourism building next to the former Westpac building on King William St and the Southern Cross Arcade a little further south both annoy me as a tremendous waste of space.
