Adelaide to Host F1 Racing Again??

#1 Post by bm7500 » Tue Jun 23, 2009 1:35 pm

Breakaway F1 snubs Melbourne

AN alleged blueprint for a breakaway Formula One race schedule has been leaked to the media, and Melbourne is nowhere to be seen.

The unverified list for the 2010 series - dubbed the 'New Formula' - lists Adelaide as the main race track option in Australia and Surfers Paradise as a reserve track.

The Herald Sun notes there is no mention of Melbourne, which currently hosts the F1 championship race at Albert Park.

According to the calendar, the rebel championship proposed by eight of the 10 Formula One teams, including Ferrari, would start the season in Buenos Aires and end in November at Adelaide, goldcoast.com.au reports.

However, the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport and industry experts have cast doubt on the veracity of the document, which is believed to have been leaked to a German journalist.

"Not surprisingly Adelaide because it was very, very popular when it had Formula One," Motor racing consultant Mike Drewer told ABC Online.

"Adelaide's been listed on a theoretical calendar but it's a bit like trying to work out who might be the members of a cabinet if there was a change in government."

The reason Melbourne would not factor in to the breakaway series, would be because of an exclusive deal with the FIA - they'd simply be contractually bound to not host a rival series.

I would absolutely love for "F1" to return to Adelaide, but there would be concern on whether the street circuit is still safe for the current cars, which are much faster than they were when we last hosted.

Oh yeah!!!! I does make sense to have it here since we did have it previously. I hope we go all out and have a night race here just like the Le Mans that was brilliant! I’d say to reduce road closures and whinging residents we should have it very close to the Clipsal 500, it would probably be cheaper that way too!

That’s it if this happens I’m buying an apartment on East terrace and watching it from my balcony!
To try to put it in some sort of perspective the World Cup is as big as having 2 grand finals a day for a month

Yeah, I don't know if the council will allow tall buildings on East Terrace. 13 levels is too tall. You won't be able to see over the treetops. Ohnoes.

Not a chance in hell........!

I would love, and i mean love to see the F1 back here in it's rightful home, but it won't happen. After watching the british Silverstone GP on sun night, it seems certain that Bernie will resolve this within the next couple of months.

I will gladly choke on humble pie if i am incorrect, but i just don't see it happening.

The state government need to pounce on this opportunity and talk to the break-away group before Bernie gets there. Bernie is the one that is the problem with F1, he is too much financially involved to ignore the best interest of the future of F1....I would go every year if we were to win it back soon.

Don't get your hopes up yet guys, the FIA is still going to reportedly take action against the teams, and Bernie Ecclestone has made some proposals for next season which might bring back the rebel F1 teams.
It would be great to have F1 in any form back in Adelaide, but it's not even a real possibility yet.
The rebel teams true to past form, most likely only announced a breakaway series in an effort to get what they want from the FIA and Ecclestone.

HOT ON THE HEELS of FOTA’s announced intent to establish a breakaway F1 series next year, a number of European media outlets (and an Australian one) are quoting from a leaked document outlining the calendar and track list for next year’s breakaway F1 series.

Most interesting… except that many are pointing to the Guardian as the source, but there is nothing on its website. The further trouble is, it seems there is not much credibility in ‘leaked documents’ these days (ask anyone who isn’t currently hiding in a cupboard around Parliament House in Canberra).

The biggest er… news… for Australians is that - if the calendar is genuine - FOTA appears to have ditched Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit in favour of Adelaide’s old street course. The rest of the leaked 2010 calendar looks like a wishlist.

Here’s what’s alleged to be in the offing for the first FOTA-led season:

3 March - Buenos Aires, Argentina
21 March - Mexico City, Mexico
11 April - Jerez, Spain
25 April - Portimao, Portugal
2 May - Imola, Italy
23 May - Monte Carlo, Monaco
6 June - Montreal, Canada
13 June - Indianapolis, United States
1 July - Silverstone, United Kingdom
25 July - Magny-Cours, France
15 August - Laustizring, Germany
29 August - Helsinki, Finland
12 September - Monza, Italy
26 September - Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
10 October - Marina Bay, Singapore
24 October - Suzuka, Japan
8 November - Adelaide

So, rather than starting in Melbourne, the ‘leaked’ document purports a season finish in Adelaide. Indianapolis and Montreal are two other major destination changes, while the Argentine, Finnish and Mexican rounds would also be new additions to the race schedule.

Curiously, suspiciously, there’s no Brazilian round, while Italy gets two rounds to itself. Spa-Francorchamps has also been dropped, reportedly as it has a contract with Bernie Ecclestone’s Formula One Management until 2012.

But can this list be trusted? It seems highly unlikely there would be any schedule of racing at this stage for the breakaway group with a final line-up of competing teams yet to be established.

And racing of this type is a huge logistical exercise, for the organisers, the teams and for the host cities… no-one just points at a map, circles a city and says, “Let’s go there.”

We’d put this one in the “suckered again!” category for any news media that released it. For the time being, we’d say Australia’s F1 round isn’t heading back to the City of Churches just yet (sorry Adelaide… you can all start breathing again).

It is not official that the breakaway new championship series by FOTA is going ahead. And the event calendar is also not official, probably a make up, and nothing from the FOTA website releasing the event calendar:

http://www.teamsassociation.org/

But it is nice to know the true F1 fans (or whoever wrote the unofficial events) have preference on the Adelaide track over the Melbourne Albert Park.

Haha classic!!

To nay sayers lets just dare to dream hey! Close your eyes and just imagine how amazing it would be to have F1 (or the closest thing we can get) here in Adelaide again!

It is great to dream, but there really isn't much chance in this going ahead..

There is no way that FOTA can financially support a breakaway series. Similarly an F1 championship without the likes of Ferrari, Mclaren, Brawn and Red Bull (basically all other teams without williams and force india who have sided with the FIA) will not be good for the FIA sanctioned F1.

This isn't the first time that FOTA have threatened to walk, its a common tool used to make the FIA listen.

As political as this scenario is for F1, The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) and FOTA (Formula One Teams Association ) will come to a compromise over this. Rumour has it that they will announce an an agreement in the next 4-6 weeks.

Yeah i know that's true I can see FOTA getting most of their way and not have to cap all their spending and I'd guess the FIA would just be happy they have a race next year!
But god it would be good!

No breakaway series afterall, much expected by everyone.

FIA and FOTA has come to an agreement, FOTA will honour Max's teams budget-cut request, not as soon as next year but in 2 years, and Max has agreed to step down immediately.

Of course, similar threats between them all this while may tell a different story, Max may then change his mind and stand for re-election as FIA's president again just like he did 5 years ago

At the end of the day, no, Adelaide is not going to host F1. Not under FIA's F1 Series anyway, as FIA and Melbourne's contract is still on, and SA cannot afford the high hosting fee by FIA.

I do believe though, that one of FOTA's demands was that the fee for hosting races be brought down in an effort to make ticket prices much more affordable.
