I think 9 is the top. It goes up so each point (being .1 of 1) is 10 times more intense than the last. It is not a standard arithmetical increase. A graph of relative intensities would reveal an increasingly sharp rising in the curve with progression from left to right.
The hospital is well beyond reach of major damage if it has been built to stand magnitude 10. Would be interesting to see what they did to get this capacity.

There's only ever been 5 earthquakes over 9.0 since 1900. The richter scale goes up to 9.0 and greater.
Two of them have happened in the last 10 years. Boxing day 2004 in Indonesia a 9.1 and 2011 9.0 in Japan.
Biggest ever recorded since 1900 is 9.5 in Chile.
The biggest we've ever had in SA was 6.5 in Robe in 1897.
In 1954 Adelaide got a 5.5 that caused widespread damage. Hopefully our building standards have improved and a similar quake wont do too much damage.
The biggest in ever felt in Australia was in 2004 1,300km off Tasmania, an 8.1 that was even felt in New Zealand.

Hey! Something I can actually give a moderate amount of assistance upon!
A 9.0 on the Richter Scale isn't the cap, nor is 9.9 or 10. It's unlimited, however something larger than the quake that Rev referred to that hit Chile (it was in the 1960s though, mate) is highly unlikely to happen within the next couple of hundred years. Even a 9.0 is a twice-in-a-century event. A 9.1 is approx 150% more powerful than a 9.0, with a 9.2 a further 150% more powerful than a 9.1.
This link here shows the approximate frequencies of such disasters. Alternatively,
the highest magnitude ever estimated on the Richter Scale was a barely believable 22.88 that was recorded on the crust of a neutron star.
It's fairly interesting stuff to read up about.

Oh yeh I know, I meant overall since 1900.
There's been two 9 or greater in the last 10 years, the third and fourth biggest recorded.
And 6 of the biggest 17 ever have been in that time too.
I don't think Adelaide's at risk though.
Sure we might get a quake that will cause some damage, but we aren't going to get anything that will be that bad that the earth will be shifted from it's axis.
With all the scrutiny this hospital has gotten since before the first site fence even went up, I doubt they'd be building it where it is if there was any significant risk.

I feel like stressing that the chances of this happening as they have are really friggin low!

The colour scheme from the back is terrible. Let's hope in five or ten years time they give it a quick makeover once they've realized the error of their ways in cladding the hospital in Port Adelaide colours. Obviously they're not going to change it now...
Something copper-like the treatment they've given on the new Adelaide Oval / Convention Centre would have been a better choice IMO.

I was sad when the cladding on the back starting going up too. But more because if how awesome and imposing it looked completely bare.
(Also, they're more green than teal)

That is one HUGE place - 10 floors???? over a big distance. Here's hoping the cladding and colour do not spoil it. Very impressed.

Well our Premier is a Port Adelaide boy
But that aside, do you think the bare concrete next to it makes a difference to what it currently looks like overall?
And is that the final colour scheme? I mean, is it going to get a lick of paint or something once it's all covered up?
Even if you block out the bare concrete around it, it still looks unfinished.

Well technically it was Rann who started the project. Was he a Port boy?
