Not only that, but it claims to be 'Now Leasing', meaning that any fundamental changes are most likely out.

Can't get over what a wasted opportunity this City Central development has turned out to be.

Yes, a genuine wasted chance at an iconic/impressive building on a landmark location!

I agree with your sentiments fellas. Such a great piece of real estate for an iconic building and all we are going to get is another 17-level clone.

Too true.

But that blank western wall is just too much of an insult. It must not be allowed!

It's annoying to see developments with the design quality of SA Water or HIlls on the cards in comparison to yet another variation of the CC glass box theme. It's no coincidence that I'm most looking forward to seeing the Electra House development - the only one with some degree of interest, and that's only because the original building is being kept.

All will be forgiven with a marvellous GPO/hotel/apartment/retail development overlooking Victoria Square, of course. A true flagship building to take our collective breath away, and instantly dwarf all the mundane little boxes around it.

Dignity be damned; I'll get on my knees and beg, and if I need to do a bit more while I'm down there on my knees, then so be it. I just can't bear the thought of such a majestic building as the GPO ruined by an unimaginative fishtank perched above.

Agrred. It is almost beyond imagination as to how they can do this and maintain the majestic elegance of the GPO.
On the positive side, I am hoping against hope that this, another landmark bldg, remains the same, complemented wisely by above and near it so as to arrest the sight of any observer in VSQ.

Agree again concerning the preponderance of 17 - 18 floor bldgs - do people run out of money/materials then?

And yes, all will be forgiven if the GPO complex is a real landmark construction.

Perhaps the developers are getting nervous about whether they will be able to fill the buildings with tenants considering all the office space coming onto the market soon?

If that's the case they either build something really special now or wait a year or so (...and then build something special  :D ).

My thoughts exactly. Although I admit I am not a businessman, I would assume that it would be a good business idea to present a building that stands out from the other boxes.

...but it's always better to be one of the herd. It's risky to try and do something different from the mainstream.

As much as people don't like it, the box is probably the most economical shape to make a building out of, particularly in a city like Adelaide where most land plots are rectangular in shape.

There are boxes, and there are boxes.

Lever House, 1952 (from which City Central et. al. stole all that green glass malarkey, but eschewed elegance and purity of line for stupid pods and ridiculous roof protrusions):

Marvellous!

Just shows you we need to go to the past for our designs. :)

Cheers

P.S. A forty-storey office tower (a-la Seagram) would also look nice! :D

Seagram still looks hot as apple pie to this day! Just what Adelaide needs.

excellent post omicron! those buildings are timeless, I recommend anyone to look them up on wikipedia, very interesting stuff ... unfortunately the old advertiser building was closer in style than the current city central buildings.. not that city central has been a complete failure...if only there was more height..
