Wards are back and they're bigger than ever

THEY'RE back.
City councillors unanimously voted this week to return to the old ward system discarded in 1998 and increase their numbers by another three members.
After nearly a year of talk and tweaking, the council, as expected, will divide into three wards with each represented by two elected councillors.
A further five councillors, plus the Lord Mayor, will be elected by the city as a whole.
The new wards are: a north ward, covering only North Adelaide and bounded by North Tce and the ring road; a central ward, bounded by North Tce and Gouger St; and a southern ward, bounded by Gouger St and South Tce.
Presently, the council has eight councillors and the Lord Mayor serving on a city-wide basis.
The changes will be in place for this year's postponed election, expected to be in October or November.
They were made in response to lobbying from some city residents, mainly in North Adelaide, who felt their interests would be better served by councillors with a more local focus.
The new model has been criticised by business groups for being too parochial.
An independent panel commissioned by the council to review its electoral structure also opposed the changes, saying a localised ward system detracted from the council's main role ``to govern the city as a capital city''.
Cr Sue Clearihan, of North Adelaide, said the new model was the best of both worlds.
``It's a balanced approach that reintroduces wards as well as maintaining city wide representation,'' Cr Clearihan said.
``It's important that people at a local level feel they have local representation.''

What would make me happy is if the state government stepped in. The North Adelaide NIMBYs keep thinking they live in a suburb, and forget that it's a capital city.
The ACC has a population of just 13,000, yet has a working population of 90,000 and then several tens of thousands more of students, visitors and so on. There were 7000 votes at the last ACC election. Democracy?

Well past time to merge all the inner-metropolitan councils. Adelaide is no longer a central town with a bunch of outlying villages and towns surrounded by farmland. It's one big contiguous developed area now.
Have Adelaide in the middle, Elizabeth to the North, Noarlunga to the South and Hills to the East.

Just a random thought. Is the big-screen on the Rundle Mall facade of City Cross still going ahead?
Re: News from the ACC
According to the Makris website http://www.makris.com.au ... yes
An impressive 6m by 6m interactive big screen is planned for the Rundle Mall façade of City Cross – to be developed by the Octopus Media Group. This will be an icon in Adelaide rivalling the Rundle Mall Silver Balls.

Application has been lodged with Adelaide City Council for a 4 Level addition to the existing building located at 2 - 12 King William Street (New Seasons of Adelaide). To increase size of the hotel. Will be interesting to know more on this project as it would make a significant impact on the skyline. I hope they do a better job then 223 North Terrace.
Re: News from the ACC
2 King William Street? Isn't that the old Westpac building? If it is, it'd be interesting to see how they blend it into the heritage facade.
