Where is Stumpjumper? I'm trying to figure out what role the SDA played in Issi's demise.

I'm hoping that if Marshall gets in he won't start proposing stupid ideas like death duties...

If he'll do away with death and taxes I just might vote for him.

Steven Marshall, new SA Liberal Opposition Leader, may just bore us all to death.

Check out the answers he gave to questions at the end of this article in this Advertiser/Adelaide Now interview which attempted to reveal a bit more of the persona behind the man who has stepped up to replace Izzy.
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/sout ... 6567416567

Seems like he has no favourite band or movie or book he can tell us, has never had an embarrassing moment, never had a dream job as a kid and so on .... read the rest for yourself. Zzzzzz
Trying to be bland, non-committal or maybe he is .... well, .... sort of ... boring?

oh come on.

did you listen to his press conference? the man was under attack the instant he was put in front of the media - I'd be playing a very straight bat if I was him.

I'm sure over the next 12 months you'll get a chance to learn about him, he is already more likeable than his predecessor (and hers), it is just a shame about the deputy position.

Well I'm disappointed already - not because he's boring but because he's already making the same mistakes as the previous SA Liberal governments: prioritizing debt reduction instead of the things that genuinely make us more attractive to business and residents.

BTW a very rough calculation from his figures indicates he thinks the state is (or will be) paying 5.7% interest on its debt. While not as bad as what InDaily saw fit to publish last year, that still seems quite excessive for government debt. Does anyone know what the real figure is?

that wouldn't be outlandish

I'm actually impressed with him, his focus was not debt reduction but to make doing business cheaper (go to his press release) the debt business was in the constant and annoying questions from the media about public servants jobs - don't believe the media.

Wouldn't it? According to last Saturday's 'Tiser, the 10 year bond rate is 3.5% and the 3 year bond rate only 2.85%. You don't think a rate of double that figure, for some of the safest debt around, is outlandish???

I'd be far more impressed with him if he wasn't selling his party's lie of having a good economic track record. How long will it be before we have the opportunity to elect a party that promises neither false economies nor extravagant schemes of dubious benefit?

I did laugh at that too, they were in government so long ago and they managed to screw up a vast majority of things so yes, less of that would be nice.

with the rate - like your said the Australian 10 year Bond money is sitting around the 3.5% mark SA is ranked well lower than that - so perhaps 5.7% is too much?

would be curious to know the real figures, I wonder were we would get them.

edit - http://www.investors.asn.au/education/f ... nds/#state

this site reckons NT is up around 5.6%

Didn't we have a federal politics thread?
Oh well..

Senator Xenophon has been detained by Malaysia. Aren't they meant to be our allies and friends?
Lets see how the federal government handles this, given Xenophon hasn't exactly been a "yes man" for them.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but, I think the Scientologists got him. Follow me here:
* Xenophon has made noises regarding the state of democracy in Malaysia.
* Xenophon has made a speech about the evils of Scientology.
* Someone took that speech and replaced the word "Scientology" with "Islam".
* Nick gets nicked in the airport as enemy of the state.

The thing is there's a whole load of Australian pollies heading over there now for talks on democracy in Malaysia. See if they get snagged as well.

And this from one of the more moderate Islamic governments. Although the Malaysians got the wrong end of the stick when the article replaced scientology with Islam, that anyone making an adverse comment on Isalm becomes an "enemy of the state" in a supposedly moderate Islamic democracy, should ring alarm bells to us all. Time to wake up people. This is not some benign, peaceful all embracing lifestyle alternative. Even the Mufti is telling Nick to be vigilant when travelling now.

Stereotyping much?
