Howie wrote:Nowadays you have to photomatch everything for it to be included into the Best of 3D Warehouse layer, admittedly you could get into more details but once the polygon count starts soaring you'll end up with a pretty model that'll never get included into the Best of layer (like what happened with the Adelaide Railway Station). I did create balconies though

I expected every brick to be custom made
But, enough with the jokes, that is some nice work there mate! Keep it up!

hey howie et al,
Excuse my ignorance, but is there a way in google Earth to have all these fantastic sketchup buildings appear by default? and i don't just mean changing settings on my PC so i can see them - Can they be made to appear as default for everyone?

Only way is if you guys vote for them in the collection. Only then will they appear in the Best of 3D warehouse layer, and by default to the general public.

Just by clicking on the stars under the model and giving it a rating.

how many ratings are required before they get made public?

done. i reviewed and gave a 5star rating to heaps of Adelaide models, mostly created by howie.
Others could/should consider doing it too ==>

hi howie, i'm confused why many of your 3D sketchup models are not publicly viewable in Google Earth? Most have been rated highly, and should have been made viewable according to the Google Earth guidelines...
Best of 3D Warehouse
If you would like your models to be considered for inclusion in this layer, follow these steps:
- 1. Locate (geo-reference) your building using Google Earth and Google SketchUp
2. Model your building with Google SketchUp
3. Publish your model to the Google 3D Warehouse
If you selected "Google Earth ready" when publishing your model, we review it to see if it meets our acceptance criteria. If accepted, the model will appear in the Best of 3D Warehouse layer in Google Earth.
This selection process takes time, but you should see your models in the layer within a few weeks
Acceptance Criteria
- 1. Model existing, real-world buildings
2. Use photos for your textures
3. Model efficiently. The lower number of polygons the better
4. Position (geo-reference) the building accurately in Google Earth
5. Ensure that the model is planted into the terrain in your Google Earth snapshot by using the "Toggle Terrain" button in Google SketchUp
6. Avoid making duplicates of existing models. However, improving upon an existing model is highly encouraged!
7. Do not include anything in the model that does not exist in the real-world, including advertisements or watermarks
8. Provide a useful, interesting description of the building

Because unfortunately it's still a human process over on google's side, when their judges get around to judging your model they'll assess it based on it's merits. That could take months to a even a year in some cases. Google will be streamlining this process to get acceptance into the Best of 3D Warehouse layer in the future.
Btw, stay tuned, today we just started on a very significant Google Earth project (a collaboration with S-A and the ACC).. hopefully the first of many to come. You'll hear more in the very near future.

Wow, sounds like exciting news Howie. Well done on the Google Earth model project.
That reminds me, I remember the ACC wanting to establish a city model for development purposes, shadowing, heights, etc. Is this what you'll be involved in?

Wait a few weeks until we've got something decent to show you, and you should have a better idea then of where we hope to go. Sorry mum's the word for now. But every other city (council) in Australia will be soooo jealous of us
