Can you read?

I said to be clear in terms of what is and isn't being demolished.

I said most likely in terms of management / ownership.

I haven't heard of any other precedent in which a pub has been forced to close, relocate to another location (which in this case is yet to be determined). Relocation, especially in winter, when trade is lower, carries significant risk in doing so, especially considering new capital start up costs and increased insurance premiums. I cannot see the current business model surviving more than a few months. Even if they have first right to a new lease, I'd argue - with what money? Especially if the temporary venue fails.

pubs are a dying breed in this town... its too expensive for local punters to drink in them

different with hotels when the guests are more likely to spend their money

Do we know whether this is still going to be student housing? I was under the impression after Wee Hur divested, it was back to the drawing board. If so the chances of something new being designed, approved and built within the two year timeframe would seem optimistic.

Honestly? The biggest shame beyond losing Roxies and Chateau is the fact that the old Producers Bar would have been a perfect substitute for the Cranker given it has a sizeable performance space/band-room, similar size front bar and an upstairs space that could have catered for Midnight Spaghetti, it's also within walking distance of the existing Cranker... But it's being converted into a drug and alcohol rehab centre, how ironic. :?

The developers divested the bulk of their property portfolio. The Cranker was not one of them.

Yes it will still be student accommodation.

Oh ok thanks. I thought they were done with student accommodation and shifting their investments into other areas. The cynic in me doubts this project will go ahead but time will tell. Just hope the Cranker doesn't sit empty for years deteriorating like the King's Head, Wright St etc

Student Accomodation is the heroine of city development

Announced today, The Cranker will be occupying the former Edinburgh Castle on the corner of Currie and Gray for the 2 year duration of construction

https://www.indailysa.com.au/citymag/cu ... e-revealed - worth nothing that an earlier iteration of the Ed Castle closed its doors in 2018 due to construction of the student tower behind it, and perhaps when The Cranker moves back home at the end of the lease, someone else can keep the Ed Castle going as its own thing once again.

Nice! I wonder if they'll still be able to have live music though, being so close to the student accommodation?

I recall the Grace Emily had some dramas when student accommodation went up across the road from them.

I don't think they'd be going there if they couldn't have live music, it's a core value.

Should also help the proprietors learn how to deal with a tower of student neighbours, and give them experience at trying to get some of them through the doors.

Good points, although I imagine they'll have their work cut out for them tempting residents (mostly international students) inside.

I wonder how this will impact the Grace, since they have a similar clientele to the Cranker (unlike the previous Ed Castle incarnation). Could be competition, or perhaps more motivation for people to head over to the west side.

Anyway, it's great to see the Ed Castle site occupied again. We have enough abandoned pubs falling into ruin around town already.

Great news for the West End :)

I'd hope it could be complimentary to the Grace Emily. Biggest question mark will be how it handles random traffic since it will be more of a destination than somewhere you can pop in while in the East End.
