United Airlines has released new routes, and has overlooked Adelaide. So no direct flights to the US yet.

Labor gov. were in talks with them, who knows what if anything the new Lib. gov did.

What combinations of US airport and aircraft can handle a fully-laden trip to Adelaide without a fuel stop on the way?

Adelaide airport to LAX is just over 13,000 km.
United flies into Sydney and Melbourne and AA & Delta fly into Sydney. LAX is a major hub for all three.
Hawaiian Airlines flies to Sydney and Brisbane. Distance between Sydney and Honolulu is nearly 8,200km, to Brisbane 7,500km. Adelaide to Honolulu is nearly 9,200km.

-United operate the Boeing 777-200ER which has a range of just over 13,000km, but they are replacing them with the Airbus A350-900, which has a range of 15,000km.
-American Airlines also operates the 777-200ER, but they are replacing theirs with the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which has a range of 14,140 km. United also operates the 787-9. It also operates the Airbus A330-200 with a range of 13,450km.
-Delta operates the 777-200ER and the 777-200LR. The 777-200LR has a range of 17,395km. It has orders for the A350-900 as well. Delta operates the A330-200 as well.
-Hawaiian operates the Boeing 787-9 and the A330-200.

The Airbus A380 can fly 14,800km.

Passenger planes always have additional fuel but I don't know how much...do they need enough to fly 500km, or 2000km in case of emergency, diversion, or have to be in a holding pattern, or is that extra fuel factored into those max ranges stated.

Perth to London, which Qantas operates non-stop flights, is 14,491km.
Qantas is planning on Sydney & Melbourne non stop to London and New York next.
Sydney to New York is 16,003km, London 17,008km.
Melbourne to New York is 16,687km, London 16,918km.

Direct non stop Adelaide to LAX is doable technically. Whether it's profitable for airlines is another thing.

That's the question. Out of all those airlines you mentioned, Hawaiian would be the best as you wouldn't need to fly direct but have a nice stopover. Good if you are a tourist. Business not so much. Pity Fiji Airways dropped their flights. Unfortunately their connection times to the USA weren't ideal. That's something they should've tinkered with. Also the Boeing 737 Max issue didn't help.

Hope AAL haven't lost interest.

I doubt there would be an interest in a Hawaii stopover. You might as well stop over in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne or Auckland for pretty much the same thing.

Been that way for over 4 weeks. I sent an email to AAL they were going to have it fixed-seems to be they are in no hurry to fix it.

Adelaide Airport named Australia’s best airport in new list
September 3,2019

For years the title of Australia’s best airport has been hogged by the big cities on the east coast.

But a new list gives Adelaide Airport the title of Australia’s No.1, ranking it among the world’s top 10 airports.

The list, released by luggage storage network Stasher, ranked more than 100 airports around the world, using four criteria: fewest delays, shortest distance to city centre, cost of airport parking and quality of restaurants.

Adelaide was rated seventh in the world, among a top 10 that also included major global hubs such as Heathrow, Bangkok and Qatar’s Hamad International Airport, along with more surprising entries including Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport and Trinidad and Tobago’s Piarco International Airport.

Among other Australian airports, Brisbane was ranked 18th in the world, while further down the rankings were Perth and the Gold Coast at 60th and 61st respectively. Melbourne (68th) beat Sydney (84th), while Cairns was ranked 85th in the world.

The new list’s results are in stark contrast to the results of the annual Skytrax World Airport Awards, which earlier this year ranked Adelaide Airport the worst among Australia’s big six airports. According to those rankings — based on a global airport customer satisfaction survey — Brisbane Airport was the best in Australia, followed by Sydney.

However, the new study’s focus on aspects such as airport parking costs ranks Adelaide ahead of the larger Australian airports. For instance, at Adelaide Airport an hour’s parking starts from $4 compared to a minimum $10 at Melbourne Airport.

World’s best 10 airports ranked by Stasher

1. Sheremetyevo International Airport, Moscow, Russia

2. Heathrow Airport, London England

3. Piarco International Airport, Trinidad & Tobago

4. Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, Thailand

5. Copenhagen Airport, Denmark

6. Jose Maria Cordova International Airport, Colombia

7. Adelaide Airport, Australia

8. Calgary International Airport, Canada

9. El Dorado International Airport, Colombia

10. Hamad International Airport, Qatar

Australia’s top 7 airports

7. Adelaide

18. Brisbane

60. Perth

61. Gold Coast

68. Melbourne

84. Sydney

85. Cairns

What a poorly written article... I don't think I've ever read anywhere that Australia's east coast airports are the best in the country, in-fact the exact opposite...

It's a pretty dumb list. There's 8 criteria ranked out of 10, and then the end result is a straight unweighted average. Adelaide is propelled up the list by its 9.18/10 ranking for "shortest distance to city centre" and 8.11/10 for "cheapest parking". Other than abysmal rankings for "access to shops" and "access to lounges" (which to be fair, they're addressing), it's average/high marks across the rest of the board.

I like Adelaide Airport, and think it's a great smaller sized airport, but this ranking is worthless.

It's a pretty standard PR exercise to publish a survey as a hook for paid or earned media, in this case on behalf of a luggage storage company. The methodological accuracy of the survey is not nearly as high a priority as driving impressions -- which they've certainly achieved. Pays to cast a critical eye over who's publishing and why.

That list misses Singapore, Hong Kong, Krakow and my favourite US airport Indianapolis
