Mr Baker also said he wanted traffic flows improved on Sir Donald Bradman Drive. ``We have a real problem from the airport into the city.''
The last sentence might be of interest to those advocating a rail link to the city.
Yes, music to my ears SRW. I hope Phil Baker considers this and keeps a corridor open.
Would love to see a steel and glass canopy-covered terminus fronting a (covered) plaza between Arrivals and the new hotel, serviced by escalators to ground level Departures and car park pedestrian entries.
Cheers

What if Qantas or Emirates (who are considering Adelaide) or even Virgin establish the hotel next to the airport.

A hotel of Virgins?
That might solve our Veale Gardens issues, come to think of it.

I can't imagine there being too many virgins hanging around veale gardens late at night.

'High quality, dignified' hotel for airport
STUART INNES, TOURISM WRITER
April 08, 2008 08:30pm
A HOTEL proposed for Adelaide Airport will be "high quality and dignified" and have up to 200 guest rooms, the major development plan document reveals.
Adelaide Airport Ltd has issued the preliminary draft plan document under its obligation to invite public comment on the development.
The papers show the proposed hotel will be within a convenient walk, indicated to be within 400m, from the $260 million T1 passenger terminal.
The hotel may sit on part of what is now the main car park in front of T1. AAL also hopes to have a multi-storey airport car park to compensate.
The planning document says the hotel's lower floors are expected to include plazas and restaurants, plus such recreational facilities as swimming pools and a gymnasium. There also would be bars and lounges.
Airport hotels are popular for conferences and the one at Adelaide Airport is expected to have conference areas and meeting rooms.
The upper floors are expected to have 120 to 200 rooms over five or more levels.
AAL managing director Phil Baker has said "four or five major players" in the hotel industry are interested in operating the hotel.
In his foreword to the development plan document, Mr Baker says a hotel would give the travelling public new and innovative services.
"The hotel is planned to complement the airport's Terminal 1 and offer the travelling public convenient, high-quality and dignified services as part of their travelling experience," Mr Baker says.
Once construction work starts, it is anticipated the hotel would be operating within two years.
The planning document cites the steadily increasing occupancy rates of Adelaide hotels in its justification for a new hotel.
South Australian Tourism Alliance chairman Les Penley said Adelaide was nearing the point where it required another international-class hotel.
Mr Penley agreed with the concept of an airport having a hotel on-site.
"It brings it into line with other international airports around Australia," he said.
AAL is inviting public comment on the proposals.

I just returned from Sydney where I visited the airport twice. The second was to fly back to Adelaide and the first was to view all the aircraft and airlines that we in Adelaide either don't even know exist, or are aware of but dream of them coming to Adelaide.
The most common was example was the 747-400 which seldom comes to Adelaide. The only time it comes is when SIA Cargo come, or on the odd Qantas or SIA flight to Singapore.
We really should try and attract more airlines to use our airport because people's awarness of Adelaide will increase. Some airlines which can potentially come to Adelaide include: Emirates, Thai Airways International, JAL Airways, Korean Air (to service the large amount of Korean immigrants and it could also offer more alternatives for Adeladians flying to different parts of the globe), China Air (which, like Korean Air can service the large amount of Chinese people in South Australia and, like Korean Air could provide more alternatives for Global Travellers), V Australia (which would benefit from Adelaide as a hub because of its central location to the other major Australian cities), Air Asia X (which, like Emirates, is already considering Adelaide) and JetStar.
Other airlines which should increase their services include: Qantas (which really should start more International flights), Virgin Blue (which should allow more frequent and cheaper flights to Darwin and Perth as well as to Port Lincoln when they launch their services to the city), JetStar (which should start flying to Perth from Adelaide as well as to the Gold Coast and would also benefit from Adelaide as hub for its European flights due to its central location to other Australian majors).

Not every airline uses Boeing for their entire fleets, some uses Airbus as well, whichever deals went through.
But there has to have enough demand for all those mentioned airlines to want to fly into Adelaide. There really is no point for them to fly into Adelaide when most of their passengers are going to Sydney, and Sydney being the central hub for Australia will definitely have clear advantage over the number of airlines going through their airport.
Also, Adelaide airport are not opened 24hrs, even so, the MAS airline that lands at 6+am at Adelaide International Airport are greeted by sleepy and sometimes still grumpy immigration officers who works so slow, and very limited service levels. Only a few counters are open, the wait line are long and could take up to more than an hour (I am not kidding) for the last passenger from the KL-Adelaide flight to clear off and exit the door.

Still, it would be interesting to see an A340 or just
possibly an A380 (probably won't see one, but still).

Good point, however Sydney's Kingsford-Smith International Airport is only the central hub out of 'tradition'. Adelaide could easily became a cantral hub for Asian airlines because it is central to the other major cities of Australia -as I mentioned earlier. If our State Government, Qantas, Virgin Blue, JetStar and possibly Tiger Airways encourage this, it would prompt the airlines to do so. Why am I mentioning the major domestic airlines of Australia? Because if they organise codeshare agreements with these airlines, they could make a killing AND it woudn't need aircraft for longer domestic routes such Sydney to Perth and Sydney to Darwin, both of which are closer to Adelaide than to Sydney.
BTW, can anyone tell me what that diagonal strip of land which goes from Tapleys Hill Road down past West Beach Road and then becomes that Golf Course? In the street directory it says 'Federal Airports Corporation', but could anyone specify this and give some more information about it, because if our runway become over utilised, there's hardly any room for expansion.

SIA don't use 744's as cargo planes. My guess is that they are older 743s.

I have noticed this too. Before the whole IKEA, HarbourTown and Burbridge Park developments, there was room for a parallel runway to the main one, which would have operated at a length similar to the smaller runway, and I believe it is still viable (minus a few home acquistions) for the smaller runway to be extended to a length marginally smaller than the main. However I am concerned that further developments will only continue, hindering any runway expansions of sort, leaving ADL at capacity now, which is a very short-sighted decision considering the growth of passenger numbers in recent years, spending all that money upgrading the terminals and come 2050, having 2 million people in Adelaide will only force ADL to relocate elsewhere... into the Northern suburbs obviously.

I am sure that I've seen a plan of Adelaide Airport with a second full-length runway making use of the FAC land, but I'll be damned if I can remember where it is.

Greed! That's the only reason I can think of why land wasn't left for a parallel runway. Like I've said before, Adelaide has so much potential...but then we throw it away (like a north-south freeway when we had the chance), etc., etc. Anyway, a shorter runway could still be built, but for what purposes unless the larger jets improve to shorter takeoffs and landings? We'll have to wait for that to happen first...
Cheers

Very excited about the hotel development - speaks well of confidence in SA future. Airport has sure picked up significantly since the new development opened, thus realising potential not tapped.
Seems from the pic that it is about 8 - 9 levels. How, then, do the height issues concerning the CBD affect this - seeing it is in the centre of all the action. Appears as an anomoly. Make your own rules??
