The Citi Fringe apartment building on South Terrace was getting a new paint job on its Eastern and Western walls.

The boat sheds? They were supposed to be relocated to a consolidated facility west of the Morphett St Bridge from memory - that was all connected with the Marshall governments plan to build the basketball stadium on the west side of the bridge and dig out a big pedestrian walkway under the bridge’s southern approach. This was all canned by Malinauskas’ government when they were elected - campaigning against it was a centrepiece of their election campaign.timtam20292 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 28, 2024 1:09 pmI personally wish those small buildings in front of the convention centre on riverside would be demolished. I understand what they are used for but they're just an eyesore.
Actually, he isn't wrong in most of his comments here. Most of the old office buildings are not suited to conversion to residential, and the ones that are will only provide a limited amount of new housing, which barely makes a dent in the amount of housing construction required. That being said, there needs to be work done to provide the right planning and building code frameworks to encourage adaptive reuse as there is a lack of consistent national standards at the moment.gnrc_louis wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2024 12:25 pmHe says a lot of stupid things in this, which isn’t surprising: https://www.indaily.com.au/news/adelaid ... ousing-fix
I agree that it’s cost prohibitive in many cases and hard to do, but it should still be encouraged where viable, which his comments don’t help with. I also disagree with his statement that vacant houses aren’t an issue, they are, and so are airbnbs in terms of taking longer term rentals offline - but that’s a different debate.AG wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2024 1:06 pmActually, he isn't wrong in most of his comments here. I'm quite surprised by the arguments that this cannot be done.gnrc_louis wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2024 12:25 pmHe says a lot of stupid things in this, which isn’t surprising: https://www.indaily.com.au/news/adelaid ... ousing-fix
Champion said vacant houses were “an issue but it’s not the issue” in terms of housing supply.
“Empty houses across Australia, it’s a great debate for the ABC to have or The Guardian to have, it’ll get everybody excited, it’ll generate a lot of attention same as adaptive reuse of office building, but actually it’s not terribly important for supply,” he said.
There's no way there would be 1 million homes sitting vacant in SA alone. Nationwide probably, but not just in SA.baytram366 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2024 4:09 pmI can't remember where I read it but I am fairly sure I read an article recently that said in just SA alone, there are around 1 million homes just sitting vacant for various reasons. What is Champion talking about? Of course empty houses are important to the current issues.

There are so many vacant blocks in the CBD that are waiting to be developed. Balfours way on Franklin St and that block on the western section of Gouger St are a couple that spring to mind. Why are we just allowing prime real estate spots like these to sit idle in the middle of a housing crisis?
There's nothing stopping the government from purchasing that land from private owners and developing it into public housing and/or selling some of it.A-Town wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2024 6:54 pmThere's no way there would be 1 million homes sitting vacant in SA alone.
