This project has gone by a lot quicker than I initially thought. Any clue as to when the western deviation will open?

By end of July, as far as I can tell, to allow commencement of Stage 2, which includes the remaining section of bridge deck.

Western deviation is kerbed & partially paved north of Anzac Highway, and reinforcing for bridge deck is largely complete.

Are those large water tanks going to be part of the overpass structure? sustainability perhaps?

The Project Manager was on 891 radio before 5pm saying that the storm water connection from east to west side of South Rd
will be done this weekend, so the tanks & pump might be associated with that, if it happens to rain. They don't look permanent.

Just thought I'd give you guys a headsup on the South Road project.

As a nearby resident of the tram overpass project, I responded with some feedback one of my concerns being the future provision for space when widening and/or upgrading South Road into a non-stop route in the future (as the plans had failed to indicate otherwise). My question (partially forgotten, was directed at how details of this project failed to coincide with the details of the South Road project in its entirety.

Key notes:
  • South Road tunnel under Port and Grange Roads appears scrapped?
Tram overpass will accomodate a wider South Road = meaning further property acquisition in future.
$70m into planning for a non-stop corridor = I think part of this planning is evident? Because new developments along the road are setback quite some distance from the road.
Rudd commited $500m to 2014 for project.
In conjunction with the release of the ‘Strategic Infrastructure Plan for South Australia’ in 2005, the Rann Government announced its intention to create a non-stop North-South corridor between the Southern Expressway and the Port River Expressway. We have committed hundreds of millions for major projects along South Road, including an underpass at Anzac Highway, the Glenelg Tram Overpass project and an underpass at Sturt Road. The Federal Rudd Labor Government has recognised the importance of a North-South Road corridor to South Australia andhas committed $500 million through Auslink to partner the State Government on this corridor.

The Federal government’s $500 million will be provided between now and 2014, and will be used to remove key bottlenecks along the corridor.

$70 million has been committed to planning for a corridor all the way from the Southern Expressway to the Port River Expressway. The study will be the first step in making the project a reality, and include geotechnical investigations, community consultation, environmental assessments, traffic modelling and detailed cost estimates. At this point in time the nature and timing of potential improvements to the section of South Road in the vicinity of the tram overpass to provide the non-stop flow are yet to be determined however the tram overpass structure will be able to accommodate a wider South Road.

Thanks for the update, Shuz. I was on Port Rd yesterday, & the site of the demolished Pizza Hut on SW side of South Rd is on
the market (apparently not required for underpass). Shops / homes on SE side on Port Rd might be demolished, as one has a
"Save My Home" banner on it. They may be intending to slew the tunnel (if built) to the east to avoid the ETSA substation, but'
they still will need to u/g the high voltage lines between Port & Torrens rds.

The southern side of the bridge overpass has now been concreted, and is almost ready for use.
